Terrell Williams, the New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator, is stepping into a senior advisory role within Mike Vrabel’s coaching staff following his recovery from prostate cancer. The move opens the door for a new defensive coordinator ahead of the 2026 season, with inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr emerging as the leading candidate to take over permanently, according to NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
Williams, 51, has a long-standing relationship with Vrabel, dating back to their tenure in Tennessee, where Williams served as defensive line coach from 2018 to 2022 before becoming assistant head coach in 2023. He was brought on as the Patriots’ defensive coordinator during Vrabel’s first offseason in New England, calling the team’s defense in the season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders. However, Williams stepped away soon after to focus on his cancer treatment, which he has since completed successfully.

Zak Kuhr Poised To Lead Patriots Defense Following Williams’ Return And Reassignment
Kuhr filled in during Williams’ absence, guiding the Patriots’ defense through their playoff run and earning praise for his play-calling. While nothing is official, multiple reports suggest Kuhr is positioned to assume the defensive coordinator role on a full-time basis, providing continuity for a unit that ranked fourth in points allowed and eighth in yards allowed during the 2025 season.
After the Patriots’ Super Bowl LX loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Vrabel confirmed that Williams is healthy and cleared to return, but emphasized that coaching staff decisions would be carefully considered in the coming weeks. Williams’ reassignment not only highlights his recovery but also ensures his experience remains an integral part of the Patriots’ defensive leadership moving forward.
