Kansas State’s men’s basketball program fired head coach Jerome Tang on February 15 following a series of public outbursts that drew national attention. The decision came days after Tang harshly criticized his players following a 29-point home loss to Cincinnati, declaring that they “do not deserve to wear this uniform” and calling the performance “embarrassing” for the university, fans, and student section.
Tang delivered the remarks both during a postgame radio interview and in front of the press, prompting widespread backlash and leading Kansas State to terminate him for cause.
The university cited contract language regarding conduct that could bring embarrassment to the program. Athletic director Gene Taylor explained that Tang’s public remarks about the student-athletes and the negative reaction they generated, both locally and nationally, were central to the decision.
Tang’s firing came amid a six-game losing streak, with the Wildcats finishing 1-11 in Big 12 play and continuing a pattern of underperforming seasons under his leadership, including multiple teams that failed to reach the NCAA Tournament.

Inconsistent Leadership and Public Outbursts Led to Tang’s Kansas State Firing
Tang’s tenure was marked by inconsistent messaging and public relations problems. Weeks prior, he had praised the team after a 34-point loss, while in other instances blaming the NCAA for hindering his ability to build a winning program. Rarely did Tang take responsibility for the program’s struggles, despite recruiting multiple rosters that underachieved. His confrontational style and emotional outbursts increasingly overshadowed team performance, making his postgame press conferences notorious spectacles for all the wrong reasons.
The firing raises questions about contractual implications, as Tang may be required to repay part of his $18.675 million buyout if the “for cause” designation holds in court. Tang has signaled he will challenge the decision, while public reaction underscored the embarrassment, including viral images of students wearing paper bags over their heads during games. Tang’s departure ends a turbulent season both on and off the court, leaving Kansas State with the challenge of restoring credibility and stability to its basketball program.
This case demonstrates that a coach’s public conduct and communication can heavily impact their tenure, sometimes even more than wins and losses, and highlights the high stakes of leadership in collegiate sports.
