Retired quarterback Derek Carr recently announced he’s open to returning to the NFL, specifically to join a Super Bowl contender. However, as of Scouting Combine week, the New Orleans Saints have not received any inquiries regarding a trade for Carr’s contract rights. Even after the first week of free agency, no teams have reached out about acquiring him.
Meanwhile, several teams with quarterback needs have already made moves. The Dolphins signed Malik Willis, the Jets added Geno Smith, the Vikings secured Kyler Murray, and the Falcons brought in Tua Tagovailoa. With the Raiders expected to select Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza as the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, only the Steelers and Cardinals currently have openings at the starting quarterback position. Neither team is widely regarded as a Super Bowl favorite, though the Steelers could potentially compete in a wide-open AFC.

Carr could become a potential option for Pittsburgh if Aaron Rodgers chooses not to return in 2026 or if the Steelers don’t draft Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with their 21st overall pick. Some league observers expect Pittsburgh to select Simpson if he is available.
For now, Carr remains without a destination if he chooses to unretire. His availability could become more appealing later in the season, especially if a starter on a contender suffers a significant injury, creating an urgent need at the quarterback position. Until then, Carr’s return remains uncertain, with no immediate opportunities on the horizon
