Denny Hamlin returned to victory lane Sunday at the Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, driving the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota with authority. The win marked Hamlin’s first of the 2026 season, his third at the 1.5-mile track, and the 61st of his career, moving him past Kevin Harvick into 10th place on NASCAR’s all-time victories list.

The triumph carried extra significance after Hamlin’s narrow heartbreak in the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series Championship at Phoenix Raceway. Just three laps from a first championship, an ill-timed caution ended his hopes, leaving the veteran driver to spend months reconciling the disappointment.

“I knew it took a few weeks to feel like driving,” Hamlin reflected. “Over the last couple weeks, I definitely regained my love of it, got refocused. These are great opportunities for us.”

Hamlin’s race almost unraveled early due to a pit-road speeding penalty during the first stage break. Despite restarting at the rear, he methodically climbed through the field, ultimately leading 134 laps. The veteran held off a strong late charge from Hendrick Motorsports drivers Chase Elliott and William Byron, who finished second and third.

Polesitter Christopher Bell captured Stage 1, finishing fourth, followed by Ty Gibbs, Chris Buescher, and Kyle Larson, who led 62 laps and took second in both early stages. Chase Briscoe also rebounded from a penalty to finish eighth, while Bubba Wallace and Brad Keselowski rounded out the top ten.

Tyler Reddick, despite winning the first three races of the season, faded to 13th in the final stretch but maintained a comfortable points lead over Wallace and third-place Ryan Blaney.

Byron surged to the Stage 2 win after a three-wide battle on Lap 159, while Larson and Bell finished second and third. Hamlin’s patient approach paid off; he moved into second behind Byron on Lap 174, seized the lead on Lap 185, and managed the remainder of the race with skill and composure.

A late caution on Lap 211 briefly shuffled positions after Connor Zilisch spun, but Hamlin regained the lead one lap later and never relinquished it. The No. 11 car crossed the finish line 0.502 seconds ahead of Elliott, underscoring Hamlin’s poise under pressure.

This victory not only reaffirmed Hamlin’s competitive edge but also highlighted his career-long dedication. “Days like today certainly make me feel happy about where I’m at in the sport still and what I can still do,” Hamlin said. Elliott praised the effort of his team, noting that despite coming up short, their performance reflected strong preparation and consistent progress. Meanwhile, Justin Allgaier, substituting for Alex Bowman due to vertigo, finished 25th, and only 20 of 36 starters finished on the lead lap, showing the race’s intensity.

The Pennzoil 400 saw 21 lead changes among nine drivers and three cautions spanning 20 laps. Hamlin’s triumph delivered both a statement of resilience and a boost for Joe Gibbs Racing as the series shifts east.
