Phil Mickelson, three-time Masters champion, announced he will not participate in this year’s tournament, citing a personal family health matter. In a social media statement, the 55-year-old said he would be out for an extended period and wished all participants the best of luck, noting that he would be watching the event from afar.
Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley expressed support for Mickelson, acknowledging his deep connection to the Masters and emphasizing that he will be missed. Ridley also noted that Mickelson has the organization’s full support as he focuses on his family during this time.
Mickelson has been active in LIV Golf this year but missed four events earlier due to the same family health concern. He recently competed in the LIV Golf South Africa event, finishing tied for 48th while leading his HyFlyers GC squad. His absence at Augusta follows Tiger Woods’ announcement that he is stepping away from golf to seek treatment after a DUI and rollover crash in Jupiter Island, Florida.

Masters to Proceed Without Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson for First Time
The simultaneous absence of Mickelson and Woods marks a notable moment for the golf world. Both players dominated professional golf from the late 1990s through the 2010s, with Woods winning 15 major championships, including five Masters titles, while Mickelson captured six majors and three green jackets. Their rivalry and shared presence at major tournaments defined an era of the sport.
With Woods sidelined for personal reasons and Mickelson focused on family matters, Augusta National will see the Masters proceed without two of its most iconic figures. The 90th edition of the tournament is set to begin Thursday, April 9, highlighting the transition in professional golf as a new generation of players takes center stage.
Mickelson’s statement and recent absence serve as a reminder of the personal challenges athletes face, even as they maintain professional commitments. Fans will watch closely, hoping for his return to competitive play once circumstances allow.
