Robert Kraft of the New England Patriots had warned about this situation a year earlier, anticipating that the league’s success would draw legal challenges. He stressed the importance of strong legal leadership, arguing the NFL would need to actively defend its position while preparing for increasing external pressure.

His prediction has proven accurate. In 2024, the NFL faced a major antitrust ruling that resulted in a multibillion-dollar penalty tied to its “Sunday Ticket” distribution model. That case placed the league’s media strategy under a microscope and raised questions about whether its centralized approach restricts competition.

Although these issues are not new, stemming from practices that began in the late 1980s when the NFL first bundled games for national broadcasters, the current scrutiny is broader and more complex, involving courts, regulators, and lawmakers at the same time.

The potential consequences are significant. The NFL could face limits on its ability to sell broadcast rights as a single package, a key driver of its revenue model. In a more severe outcome, the league’s long-standing antitrust exemption could come under threat.
