The Atlanta Falcons have secured a significant contract extension with one of their key players, cornerback A.J. Terrell, signing him to a four-year, $81 million deal. This contract includes $65.8 million in guaranteed money, the largest guarantee ever for a cornerback on a four-year contract.
Terrell’s agents, David Mulugheta and Trevon Smith of Athletes First, successfully negotiated the deal, which now makes Terrell the second-highest-paid cornerback in the NFL on a per-year basis, earning $20.25 million annually, just behind the Green Bay Packers’ Jaire Alexander.
Terrell had acknowledged the ongoing contract negotiations at the beginning of the training camp but emphasized his focus on team activities rather than the contract details. His commitment to the Falcons has been evident since they drafted him 16th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.
At just 25 years old, Terrell has already made a significant impact, being named a second-team All-Pro in 2021 and establishing himself as a top-tier cornerback in the league.
Throughout his four NFL seasons, Terrell has been a consistent performer, highlighted by his 2021 season when he recorded three interceptions and 16 passes defensed, ranking him sixth in the NFL.
Although he hasn’t recorded an interception since then, he has consistently contributed with 36 pass breakups, showcasing his importance in the Falcons’ defense. This new contract reflects the team’s confidence in Terrell’s abilities and his value as a cornerstone of their defense.
The Falcons have been active in strengthening their roster, complementing Terrell’s extension with the recent signings of Pro Bowl talent. They added free agent safety Justin Simmons on a one-year, $8 million deal, bringing his experience and playmaking ability to their secondary. Additionally, the Falcons traded for four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Matthew Judon, further bolstering their defense with high-caliber players.
These moves indicate the Falcons’ commitment to building a competitive team with a strong defense. With Terrell locked in for the foreseeable future and the addition of other Pro Bowl talents, Atlanta is positioning itself as a formidable force in the NFL.
Terrell’s new contract not only secures his future with the team but also signals the Falcons’ intent to invest in their core players and build around them for long-term success.
