Alexis Mac Allister’s remarkable goal was crucial in Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Sheffield United, helping them reclaim the top spot in the Premier League on Thursday.
Darwin Núñez had initially put Jürgen Klopp’s team in the lead during the first half at Anfield. However, Sheffield United managed to equalize with Conor Bradley’s own goal after halftime.
As Liverpool faced the risk of dropping points in the title race, Mac Allister’s impressive long-range shot into the top corner in the 76th minute eased the pressure.
Any doubts about the outcome were dispelled when substitute Cody Gakpo scored a third goal in the 90th minute.
Liverpool now sits two points ahead of Arsenal at the top of the table, but they had to work hard against Sheffield United, who currently occupies the bottom position.
The opening goal in the 17th minute came with a bit of luck for Liverpool, as Sheffield’s goalkeeper Ivo Grbic’s clearance attempt was blocked by Nunez, deflecting into the net off him.
After halftime, Sheffield United found an unexpected lifeline when Bradley accidentally redirected Gustavo Hamer’s header into his own goal in the 58th minute.
However, Mac Allister’s fantastic strike shifted the momentum back in Liverpool’s favor, and he came close to scoring another goal when his free kick hit the crossbar late in the game before Gakpo sealed the win with his header.
