Max Verstappen’s main mechanic Lee Stevenson is leaving Red Bull after working with them for 18 years.
Stevenson began at Red Bull in 2006 as a second mechanic, later becoming the lead mechanic in 2014. He then became Verstappen’s chief race mechanic in 2023, having been part of Verstappen’s team since 2016 when Verstappen joined Red Bull.
Stevenson’s new job is with a team in Japan, at the opposite end of the pit lane. His departure from Red Bull was decided during the 2023 season.
Stevenson confirmed his departure on Instagram from Red Bull’s MK-7 facility in Milton Keynes, where he thanked everyone and reflected on his time with the team. He mentioned working on various Red Bull cars throughout the years and expressed gratitude for the experiences and achievements he had with the team.
Stevenson’s last day at Red Bull was on March 28th. Unfortunately, Verstappen retired from the Australian Grand Prix that weekend due to a rear brake issue on his RB20 car.
Chris Genty has taken over as Red Bull’s chief mechanic, a role he has been acting in since the beginning of the current season.
