Before Sunday’s games, the Diamondbacks were averaging 5.48 runs per game, which is a half run more than the second place Yankees, who average 4.98. On Sunday, Arizona continued their strong performance by winning 11-10 in 10 innings against the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Diamondbacks went ahead 5-0, then fell behind 8-5, tied the game at 8-8, fell behind again 10-8 in the 10th inning, and then scored three runs in the bottom of the 10th to win.
Eugenio Suárez hit a walk-off single to right field with the bases loaded. This win was crucial for Arizona as they compete with the Padres, Mets, and Braves for the three NL wild card spots.
Arizona’s lineup is deep and fast, featuring Ketel Marte, Christian Walker, Corbin Carroll, Joc Pederson, Jake McCarthy, and Suárez. As shown on Sunday, any lead can be overcome when Arizona is batting.
“We’re really executing at a high level and it’s not just the slug,” manager Torey Lovullo said after a 14-4 win against the Rangers last week. “It’s patient at-bats waiting for our pitch, putting down the bat, handing it off to the next guy.”
Suárez has been one of the best players in MLB in the second half of the season, hitting .320 with 18 home runs and 44 RBIs over 51 games before Sunday’s games.
