Aaron Rodgers, the oldest player in the NFL at 41, is set to retire. The youngest player in the league, however, is staying loyal to the Jets.
His team might draft a player who wasn’t even born when Rodgers first started playing in the league, but Rodgers has promised to stay on the team next year. He still has a contract for 2025, and the New York Jets don’t have a clear option for quarterback for next season.
Rodgers’ first season with the New York Jets hasn’t gone as expected, with the team sitting at third place in the AFC East with a 3-7 record.
This hasn’t been the most exciting season for the Jets with Rodgers, and the quarterback might have to consider his future in the NFL. At 40 years old, Rodgers doesn’t seem to have returned to his previous All-Pro form.
He has thrown 15 touchdowns and completed 62.4% of his passes, but these numbers aren’t as strong as anticipated. He also hasn’t reached 300 passing yards in 33 straight games since his days with the Green Bay Packers.
Rodgers, who has been taking steps to stay youthful, still seems hopeful about leading the struggling Jets team. When asked about his plans to play in 2025, he said, “Not really, not for the negative.” When asked more directly if he wanted to play for the Jets next season, he replied, “I think so, yeah.”
The Jets traded for Rodgers in April 2023, but he missed most of his first season with the team due to a torn Achilles tendon. Despite the difficulties, Rodgers said he has enjoyed the past two years. “It’s been actually a really beautiful couple of years for me in totality, but it’s obviously been frustrating with the football part,” he shared.
