The Guardians’ leadoff batter Steven Kwan is going on the injured list because of a hamstring injury, and Cleveland will bring up top prospect Kyle Manzardo, according to a person familiar with the situation who spoke to the Associated Press on Sunday.

Kwan, who was leading the AL in batting this weekend, had an MRI after leaving Saturday’s game because of tightness.

The team has seen the results and plans to put Kwan on the 10-day IL, said the person, who requested anonymity because the Guardians won’t officially announce the roster changes until Monday before starting a three-game series with Detroit.

With Kwan sidelined, the Guardians have an opportunity to bring up the powerful-hitting Manzardo, who was acquired last year from Tampa Bay during the trade deadline for pitcher Aaron Civale.

Manzardo is known for his ability to hit in the middle of the lineup, which could provide a boost to Cleveland’s offense, which has struggled to score runs.

The Guardians didn’t want to rush Manzardo, so they had him start the season at Triple-A Columbus. However, the 23-year-old has been on a hot streak with the Clippers, hitting eight home runs and driving in 14 runs in the last 14 games.

The Guardians believe he’s prepared to face major league pitchers. “He’s been performing well against left-handed pitchers, and his approach against lefties has improved,” said Chris Antonetti, president of baseball operations, before the Guardians defeated the Los Angeles Angels 4-1 in their series finale on Sunday.

“He’s been working hard on his defense, both his footwork around the bag and his throwing, and he continues to have good at-bats.” Manzardo will likely serve primarily as the team’s designated hitter but can also play at first base, relieving Josh Naylor.

Kwan’s injury is a setback for the Guardians and the two-time Gold Glove winner, who has been one of baseball’s top hitters this season.
