Chris Young has been given a new contract and a higher position with the Texas Rangers after serving nearly four years as general manager and helping lead his hometown team to its first World Series win.

On Friday, the Rangers announced that Young would receive a multiyear contract extension and be promoted to President of Baseball Operations.

Young started as the general manager in December 2020 and took over the entire baseball operations department in August 2022.

Although the Rangers won the World Series last year, they were 7 1/2 games behind in both the AL West and the wild card race going into Friday night’s game against Seattle, with 15 games remaining. Young’s initial four-year contract was due to end after this season.

Ray Davis, the team’s majority owner and managing partner, praised Young’s leadership and vision for securing the World Series title and his dedication to maintaining a winning team year after year.

The team has not provided additional details about the new contract or whether there will be other changes in the baseball operations department, such as hiring a new general manager.

Young had already been overseeing all aspects of the team’s baseball operations for two years after Jon Daniels was let go as president of baseball operations.

Daniels, who was just 28 when he became GM in October 2005, saw the Rangers reach their first World Series in 2010 and 2011. He was also named president of baseball operations in 2013 and held both titles until Young took over.
