Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati has made history by clinching the prestigious Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year award, becoming the first footballer ever to achieve this remarkable feat.
Bonmati’s outstanding performances on the pitch last year were instrumental in Barcelona’s success, as she played a pivotal role in securing both the Liga F and Champions League titles.
Additionally, her contributions were vital in Spain’s triumph at the World Cup, where she not only lifted the coveted trophy but also earned the prestigious World Cup Golden Ball and Ballon d’Or awards.
Expressing her gratitude for the honor, Bonmati stated, “Receiving the Laureus for Sportswoman of the Year is a tremendous honor for me. I am also thrilled to see my international teammates being recognized as the Team of the Year by the Laureus World Sports Academy.”
Reflecting on the illustrious list of past winners, which includes sporting icons like Serena Williams, Simone Biles, Lindsey Vonn, Naomi Osaka, and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Bonmati emphasized their role as inspiring figures for younger generations of women and girls.
She added, “Being the first footballer to win this award holds special significance for me, and I am determined to represent my sport with the same level of excellence and integrity as these great champions before me.”
