Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer has solidified his status as one of the highest-paid head coaches in collegiate football.
Following the retirement of Nick Saban, the former Washington Huskies head coach stepped into the role, securing an eight-year contract worth $87 million, as reported by John Zenor of the Associated Press.
Under this lucrative agreement, DeBoer will receive an impressive annual salary of $10.9 million. The contract spans until December 31, 2033, with incremental salary increases each year, reaching $11.75 million in the final year.
DeBoer stands to earn substantial bonuses. A $600,000 bonus awaits him should he lead the Crimson Tide to a College Football national championship game, with an additional $875,000 prize for clinching the title.
Alabama’s athletic director, Greg Byrne, emphasized the importance of investing in top-tier coaching talent, stating, “High-level investment from high-level coaches is an important part of the success that we’ve had in our department.”
DeBoer’s annual salary of $10.9 million ranks him fourth among all college football head coaches, as highlighted by ESPN’s Chris Low. Notable figures such as Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, Georgia’s Kirby Smart, USC’s Lincoln Riley, and Texas’ Steve Sarkisian are also featured in the top echelon of coaching salaries.
Previously earning $4.2 million as head coach of Washington, DeBoer’s move to Alabama marks a significant financial upgrade. His tenure at Washington saw notable success, culminating in an appearance in the national championship game against the Michigan Wolverines.
Alabama’s decision to secure DeBoer’s services involved a substantial investment, including a reported payment of approximately $12 million to buy out his contract with Washington, as disclosed by Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports.
Nick Saban, who retired as head coach of the Crimson Tide after a remarkable 17-season tenure yielding six national titles, paved the way for DeBoer’s appointment in January.
