Corbin Burnes is eager to return to a more regular schedule, despite recent chaotic weeks for the Baltimore pitcher. Burnes pitched six innings, allowing just one run and two hits in the Orioles’ 9-1 victory over the Texas Rangers, who are the reigning World Series champions, after the All-Star break.
Since his last game on July 10, Burnes had flown back home to Arizona twice to be with his newborn twin daughters. He also had a quick trip to Texas to participate in the All-Star Game.
“Yeah, it’s been a lot. It’s one of those sacrifices you make when your family is elsewhere for the year,” Burnes said. “Thankfully, everything’s been going well. Can’t complain about traveling to see family. But I’m definitely looking forward to a more normal week.”
Burnes, who now holds a 10-4 record, returned to the same mound where he started the All-Star Game just three nights earlier. Despite striking out six batters, he also issued a season-high four walks while throwing 60 strikes out of 101 pitches.
“It felt like a regular start once I settled into my pregame routine and focused,” Burnes commented.
The only run he allowed came from Nathaniel Lowe’s home run in the second inning, following two earlier two-run homers by the Orioles.
“It wasn’t a usual routine between starts for him,” noted Orioles manager Brandon Hyde. “He went home, had unusual rest, pitched in the All-Star Game, threw an inning, had two days off, and then returned to pitch a big league game. He looked fantastic tonight.”
Burnes, who made his fourth All-Star appearance, initially went home before flying to Texas the morning of the All-Star Game. After pitching a scoreless first inning, he returned to Arizona and then rejoined his team to resume the regular season against the Rangers.
