Alonza Barnett III threw a touchdown pass and ran for another touchdown, while Lloyd Summerall III scored on a pick-six in a strong second quarter, leading James Madison to a 39-7 win over Coastal Carolina on Thursday night.
James Madison (5-1, 1-1 Sun Belt Conference) took a 15-7 lead early in the second quarter with Barnett’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Thompson, followed by Thompson’s two-point pass to Josh Phifer.
Just 70 seconds later, Summerall intercepted a pass from Ethan Vasko and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. Barnett then capped a 22-point quarter with a 5-yard rushing touchdown, making it 29-7 at halftime.
James Madison started the game strong, moving 67 yards in 11 plays on their first drive and scoring with Barnett’s 9-yard pass to running back George Pettaway for a 7-0 lead. Coastal Carolina (4-2, 1-1) responded with Vasko’s 40-yard touchdown pass to Jameson Tucker, tying the game at the end of the first quarter.
In the third quarter, Barnett added a 3-yard touchdown pass to freshman Dylan Williams, and Max Lipinski kicked a 35-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to finish the scoring.
Barnett ended the game with 199 yards, completing 16 of 28 passes. He didn’t throw any interceptions but did lose a fumble.
For the Chanticleers, Vasko completed 5 of 18 passes for 84 yards and threw two interceptions.
