Mick Schumacher, the 25-year-old son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, is eyeing a return to the F1 grid following his departure from Haas at the end of 2022. Despite losing his seat, Schumacher has kept busy with test and reserve duties for Mercedes while also participating in racing, notably joining Alpine’s Le Mans-ready world endurance championship effort in 2024.
At a recent endurance round at Spa-Francorchamps, Schumacher remained coy about the F1 rumors surrounding him, stating that he is “monitoring the situation” but refrained from providing further details.
Prior to this event, he was seen at Silverstone, where he shared a 2022 Mercedes with Kimi Antonelli, a protege of Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. However, Mercedes has kept all lap times from this outing under wraps.
Despite the uncertainty, Schumacher’s uncle, Ralf Schumacher, expressed confidence in Mick’s abilities, advocating for his return to Formula 1. The younger Schumacher’s best opportunity for a comeback seems to lie with Alpine, where he has forged a strong relationship with team boss Bruno Famin. Famin, currently overseeing Alpine’s performance struggles in F1, might face the departure of both race drivers for 2025.
Wolff, who manages both Antonelli and Esteban Ocon, is reportedly pushing for Ocon to move to Mercedes-powered Williams for the 2025 season, potentially creating an opening at Alpine. However, contenders like Jack Doohan are also in the mix for the seat. Recent reports suggest that Alpine might offer Schumacher a test in a two-year-old Formula 1 car, indicating a possible return to the pinnacle of motorsport.
Furthermore, the Renault CEO, Luca de Meo, is reportedly interested in Schumacher joining Alpine’s F1 program for marketing reasons, considering the significance of the German car market for the French marque. Schumacher himself has affirmed his goal of returning to Formula 1, indicating that he is actively pursuing opportunities to make his comeback to the grid a reality.
