Andrew Abbott pitched seven scoreless innings, Elly De La Cruz doubled to bring in a run, and the Cincinnati Reds bounced back from a tough road trip to defeat the San Diego Padres 2-0 on Tuesday night.
During their recent trip out West, the Reds struggled, winning only three out of ten games against the Giants, Diamondbacks, and Dodgers. However, back at home, they managed to secure a win with a solid performance from Abbott.
The 24-year-old left-handed pitcher gave up just four hits, struck out two, and walked one. He kept the Padres’ offense quiet, allowing only one runner to reach second base. Fernando Cruz took over in the eighth inning and held the Padres scoreless.
Alexis Díaz faced some trouble in the ninth inning but managed to secure the win by striking out Manny Machado and inducing a double play from Jake Cronenworth to earn his eighth save.
Abbott also had a strong outing in his last start against the Diamondbacks, giving up only one run in seven innings, although the Reds lost that game 2-1.
Padres manager Mike Schildt praised Abbott’s performance, noting his ability to change speeds and keep the Padres’ hitters off balance.
On the Padres side, Joe Musgrove returned from the injured list to start the game but lasted only three innings, giving up two unearned runs and three hits. It was his first appearance since May 5 due to an inflamed elbow.
The Reds scored both of their runs in the second inning. Jonathan India scored on a throwing error by catcher Luis Campusano, and De La Cruz followed up with a double to drive in another run. Despite not recording any hits for the rest of the game, the Reds’ early offense was enough to secure the victory.
