Andy Murray, a three-time winner of major tennis tournaments, shared that he suffered a significant ankle injury while playing at the Miami Open. He expects this injury to keep him away from the game for a while.
Murray explained in an Instagram post on Monday that he had a complete tear of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and almost a complete tear of the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL). He mentioned that he would consult with a specialist to decide what to do next.
“It’s tough news to accept, and I’ll be out for quite some time,” Murray added. “But I’ll return with one good hip and no ankle ligaments when the time is right.” Murray underwent hip resurfacing surgery in 2019.
In a match against Tomas Machac, he lost with scores of 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (5) on Sunday. Despite his love for the game, Murray acknowledges the challenges of competing as he gets older and struggles to keep his body in top shape.
In an interview last month after winning a match in Dubai, he said, “I still enjoy competing and playing tennis, but it’s getting harder as I get older to keep up with the younger players and stay fit and healthy. I may not have much time left, but I’ll do my best in these final months.”
Murray, a 36-year-old from Britain, has previously held the top spot in the world rankings and has won the U.S. Open in 2012 and Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016.
