Alexi Lalas has voiced his support for the MLS and Inter Miami after their staggering 6-0 loss to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr on February 1.
The defeat came as a surprise to many, especially considering that Al-Nassr played without Cristiano Ronaldo, who was sidelined due to injury. Despite Ronaldo’s absence, Miami struggled to contain their opponents, leading to a barrage of goals.
This loss wasn’t the first time Inter Miami faced defeat against a team from the Saudi Pro League. Before their defeat against Al-Nassr, they suffered a 4-3 loss to Al-Hilal. These consecutive defeats have sparked criticism, particularly aimed at their defensive performance.
Responding to a question on social media about how such losses reflect on MLS teams abroad, Lalas came to the defense of Lionel Messi’s team:
“If you want to judge MLS based on a lackluster performance by a Miami team during the preseason in Saudi Arabia, it may paint an unfavorable picture. However, it’s essential to maintain perspective and recognize the advantages MLS has, particularly in playing within a country many aspire to join [USA].”
Miami has garnered attention as a destination for football stars, notably since Lionel Messi’s arrival. The team has successfully secured signings from renowned players such as former Barcelona icons Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and recently, Luis Suarez.
