Newcomer Luis Arraez hit a single in the ninth inning, bringing pinch-runner Tyler Wade home and giving the San Diego Padres a 2-1 victory over Los Angeles on Friday night, snapping the Dodgers’ seven-game winning streak.
Arraez, who was acquired in a trade with Miami last Saturday, played his first home game with the Padres. His single to center field off Michael Grove brought in Wade, sparking a joyful celebration. Wade had replaced Luis Campusano, who hit a leadoff double to left.
“I just wanted to make contact with the ball,” Arraez said. “I aimed to hit it towards the center, and he gave me the perfect pitch.”
Arraez had previously won the AL batting title in 2022 with Minnesota and the NL batting crown in 2023 with Miami.
“It’s an amazing feeling to get a walk-off hit in my first home game with the Padres,” Arraez said. “I’m thrilled and happy.” He mentioned that his mother, wife, and 5-year-old daughter were in the stands, adding, “It’s incredible, especially for the fans. They’ve supported me since my first game here.”
The following day, Arraez became the first player to achieve four hits in his debut with the Padres, during a 13-1 victory against Arizona.
“It’s fantastic,” Campusano said. “I had heard about him when I was in the minor leagues. One thing is his low strikeout rate. He consistently puts the ball in play. That’s what makes him unique. Besides that, he’s an excellent teammate and a great person, which is beneficial for our team. We’re very pleased to have him.”
