Spencer Arrighetti pitched six innings without allowing any runs, helping the Houston Astros defeat the Seattle Mariners 4-0 on Thursday, preventing the Mariners from sweeping the four-game series.
Alex Bregman hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning against Mariners pitcher Logan Gilbert. Bregman’s hit barely cleared the left-field wall, giving Houston a two-run lead. Later, he hit a triple in the sixth inning, narrowly avoiding a catch by Mariners outfielder Julio Rodríguez. Bregman then scored on a groundball by catcher Victor Caratini, extending Houston’s lead to four runs.
Caratini also contributed with a solo home run in the fifth inning against Gilbert, who allowed eight hits and four earned runs over six innings.
While the Astros found success against Gilbert, the Mariners struggled against Arrighetti, who only allowed two singles and three walks.
Astros manager Joe Espada praised Arrighetti’s performance, noting his confidence in his pitches and his ability to execute the game plan effectively.
In relief of Arrighetti, Rafael Montero, Ryan Pressly, and Josh Hader each pitched one inning without allowing any runs.
Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford made a remarkable play in the seventh inning, diving for a groundball and flipping it with his glove to second baseman Dylan Moore, who threw to first for the out.
The Mariners have had success against the Astros since the beginning of the 2023 season, with a record of 14-6.
