The New York Rangers managed to turn things around after falling behind early in the game, only to face disappointment as they nearly secured a crucial road win in the playoffs.
However, their spirits remained high as they clinched their second consecutive overtime victory, moving closer to reaching the Eastern Conference Final.
Artemi Panarin scored the winning goal just 1:43 into overtime, redirecting a pass between his legs to beat Pyotr Kochetkov and secure a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night. This victory gave the Rangers a commanding 3-0 lead in the second-round series.
Panarin’s goal came shortly after the Hurricanes’ Andrei Svechnikov tied the game with just 1:36 left in regulation, causing a surge of energy among the home crowd as they headed into overtime.
Nevertheless, the Rangers capitalized on the opportunity, delivering a stunning blow to Carolina in a showdown between two of the league’s top teams from the regular season.
“This team has shown resilience in the past and has been in similar situations,” commented New York coach Peter Laviolette during the intermission before overtime. “We were determined to finish strong and secure the win based on the way we’ve been playing.”
