White Sox general manager Chris Getz is focusing on improving the team’s international operations. He is also working on hiring a new manager and highlighting some of the team’s top prospects.
As the White Sox approach the end of a difficult season, the future looks more promising than the current situation.
“This is the cards that we’ve been dealt at this point,” Getz said. “You try to make the best of it, and I think it’s an opportunity to embrace the situation that we’re in. … I view it as kind of the frustrating part of the story, but I also know that the future’s looking bright and it’s going to make it just that much sweeter once we get there.”
First, the team needs to get through this season.
The White Sox fell to a record of 33-112 after losing 5-3 to Cleveland on Monday night, which is leading the AL Central. They set a new franchise record with their 107th loss on September 1.
The AL record for most losses in a season is held by the 2003 Tigers with 43-119. The major league record for most losses is 120 by the 1962 New York Mets in their first season.
“I think that there’s a lot to learn from for our players and our staff and personally,” Getz said, “and all you can really do right now is apply those learnings to the future.”
Part of the future involves hiring a new manager after Pedro Grifol was fired on August 8. It also includes finding a new leader for the team’s international operations following Marco Paddy’s departure due to a series of changes in the team’s scouting staff.
Grady Sizemore has been acting as the interim manager since Grifol’s dismissal. Getz mentioned that the team has developed a process for finding a new manager and has identified potential candidates but has not yet requested permission to talk to any of them.
“Our target pool is candidates that are in uniform with other organizations right now,” said Getz, a former big league infielder who became GM a year ago.
