Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies suffered a left wrist injury late in Sunday’s loss to the St. Louis Cardinals and is expected to be out for approximately eight weeks.

Albies injured himself while trying to catch a throw during the ninth inning when Michael Siani stole second base. Siani slid into Albies, causing his glove hand to bend awkwardly, resulting in immediate pain.

Albies remained crouched on the field, clutching his left wrist. Zack Short replaced him at second base for the remainder of the game.

After their 6-2 loss, the Braves announced that X-rays revealed a fracture in Albies’ left wrist, leading to the expectation that he will be sidelined for about eight weeks.

The three-time All-Star has been batting .255 with eight home runs and 46 RBIs, primarily batting second in the lineup.

This injury adds to the challenges for Atlanta’s lineup, following the loss of reigning NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. to a season-ending knee injury in May.

Earlier on the same day, the Braves placed All-Star pitcher Max Fried on the 15-day injured list due to forearm neuritis, a nerve inflammation, retroactive to Thursday.

As they pursue their seventh consecutive NL East title, the Braves are currently 8 1/2 games behind first-place Philadelphia but hold the top wild card spot in the league.
