Atlético Madrid is reportedly eyeing a move for Barcelona’s seasoned defender Marcos Alonso, with plans to potentially secure his services for the upcoming season.
According to SPORT (via Planet Sport), Atleti is keen on bringing Alonso to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, capitalizing on the fact that the 33-year-old will become a free agent when his contract with the Blaugrana expires in June.
Alonso, who joined Barcelona in September 2022, has been a key figure in Xavi’s squad but has faced setbacks due to injuries this season, limiting him to just seven appearances across various competitions. His absence has been particularly challenging for Barcelona, compounded by Alejandro Balde’s season-ending injury.
With uncertainties surrounding the futures of Axel Witsel and Mario Hermoso, both of whom are also nearing the end of their contracts, Atletico Madrid is keeping a close watch on Alonso’s situation.
Diego Simeone’s side may seek reinforcements in defense, making Alonso an attractive prospect. During his two-year stint at Camp Nou, Alonso has amassed 44 appearances and contributed three goals, helping Barcelona secure the La Liga title and the Supercopa de Espana last year.
A potential move to Atletico could see him reunited with former Chelsea teammate Cesar Azpilicueta, who joined Los Colchoneros on a free transfer following their UEFA Champions League triumph in 2021.
