Fantasy Basketball Trade Analyzer: Identify Opportunities to Acquire Low and Capitalize on High-Value Players

This is a pivotal juncture in the season to get ahead on moving players from squads that are losing playoff momentum. It’s a case-by-case basis, hence why below you’ll see the motivation to sell Jaren Jackson Jr. but eagerness to buy Jonathan Kuminga. However, at the end of the day, having guys who will contribute during the fantasy basketball playoffs is paramount, so that is a factor in mind throughout this article.

Trade away Jaren Jackson Jr., Memphis Grizzlies:

With Desmond Bane out for an extended period due to an ankle injury, Memphis is heading into a youth movement. While Jackson’s performance has been solid in a tough season, the upcoming changes in team dynamics and reduced workload make him a sell candidate.

Despite averaging 21.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.5 steals, and 2.3 blocks in his last six games, the potential drop in team morale and offensive efficiency limits his fantasy playoff impact. Look for a trade that brings in two high-floor assets or quality role players, possibly adding Evan Mobley.

Trade for Brandon Ingram, New Orleans Pelicans:

Ingram’s recent stats show a temporary dip in three-point shooting, but playing alongside a healthy Zion Williamson affects his floor spacing. Despite concerns, Ingram remains a crucial part of the Pelicans’ offense, with a usage rate in the 96th percentile among wings.

His talent and consistency make him a buy target, and his recent return from Achilles soreness suggests he’s not on a strict monitoring protocol. Ingram’s offensive contributions, especially in pick-and-roll situations, indicate better days ahead.

Trade for Jonathan Kuminga, Golden State Warriors:

Kuminga’s recent performance, including three consecutive games with 20-plus points, positions him as a valuable fantasy asset. Despite trade rumors and availability in 53% of Yahoo leagues, Kuminga’s consistency and potential for extended playing time make him a strong buy.

While his current peak may not be the ideal buying point, his floor on a nightly basis adds to his fantasy value. Consider acquiring Kuminga for his rest-of-season potential, with a preference for waiting until a slight cooldown in his production.

Trade away Tre Jones, San Antonio Spurs:

Jones has shown glimpses of strong performances, including a recent 30-point outing, but his overall ceiling is capped by the presence of other guards in the rotation. Blake Wesley and Jeremy Sochan’s involvement, along with Jones’ limitations in shooting, suggest a selling opportunity.

Despite his impressive floor general skills, Jones is at a strong sell point, and San Antonio’s interest in developing other backcourt pieces further supports this decision. Expect Jones to level out around his last year’s averages.

Trade away Norman Powell, Los Angeles Clippers:

Powell’s consistent scoring for the Clippers hides the fact that he offers little outside of points and threes. While he has been a reliable scorer, his recent shooting percentages are unsustainable, making him a sell candidate.

Considering his scoring-dependent production, trading Powell for a more well-rounded asset or packaging him for a larger piece would be a strategic move in fantasy basketball leagues.

Breslow Reveals Unsatisfactory Response Regarding Red Sox Ownership’s Dedication

Those who loathed the Boston Red Sox’s thrifty approach during Chaim Bloom’s tenure shouldn’t expect much to change with Craig Breslow leading the front office.

When the Red Sox hired Breslow in October, all signs appeared to point toward a welcome change in organizational philosophy. Breslow spoke candidly about acquiring high-end MLB talent and cited ownership’s “unwavering commitment to winning.” In a statement that has since been mocked mercilessly by the fanbase, chairman Tom Werner vowed the Red Sox would go “full throttle” in their quest to assemble a competitive roster for 2024.

Three months later, amid another lackluster Red Sox offseason, questions remain about the ownership’s commitment to building a contender. Breslow addressed those questions in a conversation with Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe.

“As I’ve gotten to know this organization better through the conversations I’ve had with ownership, they absolutely are still supportive of assembling a World Series team as quickly as we possibly can,” Breslow told Abraham. “But I think the reality is that it’s going to require a step forward from the young position players. It’s going to require the build-out of a talent pipeline of arms that we can acquire, we draft, and we can develop internally.”

“And it’s going to require aggressive player development in the minor leagues and the major leagues, so guys that we think are the next wave — (Marcelo) Mayer and (Roman) Anthony and (Kyle) Teel, that group — are not just big leaguers but impact big leaguers. The convergence of all those pieces is the fastest path to a World Series team. … We want to build this thing in a way that there’s not just quality once in a while, but there’s quality paired with consistency.”

Breslow’s answer is eerily similar to how Bloom addressed the same types of questions during his four years as chief baseball officer. It also contradicts the following comment Breslow made during his introductory press conference.

“The goal here, the goal anywhere, is not to build the most competitive minor league team,” Breslow said at the time. “It’s to build major league value and major league contributors.”

Now, it looks like Breslow and Co. are content to sit back and wait for their top prospects to develop — a process that will take multiple seasons and indicates 2024 will be another “bridge year” for the big-league club.

To this point in the offseason, the Red Sox’s only notable free-agent signing was right-hander Lucas Giolito to a two-year contract worth $38.5 million. They’ve made three trades: outfielder Alex Verdugo to the New York Yankees for three minor-league pitchers, two minor-league pitchers to the St. Louis Cardinals for outfielder Tyler O’Neill, and veteran left-hander Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves for 23-year-old middle infielder Vaughn Grissom.

Boston has finished last in the American League East standings in three of the last four seasons. If the timid approach to spending on premier talent continues, fans should brace themselves for a third consecutive season in the cellar.

Manchester United set sights on Arsenal striker and consider defenders from Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

Manchester United may need reinforcements this month, but their plans for a striker and a defensive duo will have to wait until the summer. Also, competition for Liverpool in the race for Newcastle star…

Plenty of fresh, steaming Manchester United rumors are doing the rounds this freezing Tuesday morning…

According to Sky Sports Germany, the Red Devils are considering summer moves for Josh Zirkzee, Matthijs De Ligt, and Ronald Araujo.

In Zirkzee’s case, United asked Bologna about a January deal but was told the 22-year-old is going nowhere until the end of the season. In the summer, the striker will be available for around £34.5million owing to the terms of the buy-out clause in his contract with the Serie A club. Arsenal are also keen on Zirkzee, who has eight goals and four assists for Bologna this term.

The same source suggests United could also move for Bayern Munich defender De Ligt.

Apparently, the center-back is not entirely happy in Bavaria, where he has yet to nail down a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s XI. De Ligt has started only five games across the Bundesliga and Champions League. Unless the 24-year-old’s status improves, then he could seek a summer switch, with United linked on account of the player’s connection with Erik ten Hag from their Ajax days.

De Ligt won’t be happy to hear of Bayern’s interest in Araujo. The Barcelona defender is ‘a top target’ for Tuchel, while United are also said to have made inquiries, at which point they were informed that a January deal would cost them £69million. But that hasn’t deterred the Red Devils entirely, with both clubs still interested in the Uruguay defender ahead of the summer.

On Monday, it was claimed that Liverpool were considering a move for Bruno Guimaraes. Today, it is PSG’s turn to be linked with the Newcastle midfielder.

The Magpies are potentially vulnerable due to their own concerns over staying within FFP limits, while Guimaraes has a buy-out clause in his contract worth £98million that, apparently, can be paid in three installments.

Joining Liverpool in monitoring the Brazilian is PSG, according to Talksport, while Barcelona has also been credited with an interest.

Newcastle’s finances mean they are no longer in the running to sign Kalvin Phillips…

The Magpies want to strengthen their midfield, especially now after it emerged that Joelinton could miss the rest of the season, but The Telegraph reports that Manchester City’s insistence on a loan fee being paid scuppers what hope they had of bringing in Phillips for the rest of the season.

That doesn’t mean the England international doesn’t have options. Sky Sports says Crystal Palace, Everton, West Ham, and Juventus are interested in the 28-year-old.

Manchester United Experiences a Significant Decline, While Arsenal’s Performance Sees a Comparable Dip Following the Transfer of Declan Rice.

Manchester United created the third-most Big Chances in the Premier League last season. This term, it’s a woefully different story. The numbers don’t make reading for Arsenal either…

Manchester United are a dull watch right now. Erik Ten Hag has spent most of the season fighting fires while attempting to tighten up his defense. Whether he will get the opportunity to properly address his faltering attack, Sir Jim Ratcliffe will see…

The 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Sunday, the first game Ratcliffe has taken in since he began moves to buy into his boyhood club, was further evidence of the Red Devils’ creative struggles. United scored twice and took a point, but the stats suggest they were fortunate.

Declan Rice
Declan Rice (Credits: Sky Sports)

They created only one Big Chance – which wasn’t taken by Scott McTominay in added time – which is in keeping with the general lack of threat they have carried all season.

United is languishing in 13th place in the Big Chances Created metric. On average, Ten Hag’s side is carving out just 1.43 big chances. And that’s with Bruno Fernandes, one of the Premier League’s most creative individuals.

The drop-off from last season is perhaps the most alarming aspect for Ten Hag. Last term, only Liverpool and Manchester City – leading the way once more this term – created more big chances than United. Now, most of the league is at it.

The numbers don’t make great reading for Arsenal, either. The anecdotal evidence suggested the Gunners were nowhere near as creative as they were last season while Mikel Arteta firmed up his midfield, and the numbers back up that theory.

Aston Villa have climbed on the back of their ruthlessness as one of three sides to score more goals than the number of Big Chances they have created – Bournemouth and Fulham are the others. Is that sustainable?

If Everton and Brentford were more clinical in front of goal, they would not be worried about relegation. But they weren’t, so they are.

Looking down further still, it is hardly a surprise to see the Premier League’s bottom two creating the fewest Big Chances. Though the five sides who propped up this table last term all survived. Leeds (15th), Southampton (13th), and Leicester (ninth, FFS!) were all too wasteful to stay up.

Karmine Corp LoL coach YamatoCannon discusses team’s winless LEC debut

In a week that held high expectations for LEC debutants Karmine Corp, the French powerhouse faced an unexpected setback, concluding their first week with a 0-3 record.

In an interview with Dot Esports following KC’s loss against MAD Lions KOI, head coach Jakob “YamatoCannon” Mebdi shared his insights on the team’s debut in the league, delineating their path ahead of the second week of the 2024 Winter Split. While acknowledging the squad’s current situation, he underlined that when a team is “forged through challenges and hellfire,” they can come out “stronger than ever”—and that with the right adjustments, KC can find success in the remaining games.

“We played worse today than the previous two days,” YamatoCannon said to Dot on Jan. 15, “but I don’t think that really matters.” Despite their start to the split, the head coach emphasized the need for his team to maintain perspective, focusing on the long-term goal of playoff qualification and improvement over the next few weeks.

KarmineCorp entered the LEC under intense scrutiny, given their stellar performance in the LFL and EMEA Masters in previous years, including last year’s Season Finals in Montpellier. Their victories had cultivated significant attention, fostering excitement for their debut in the highest league in the region, resulting in a record-breaking viewership weekend for the LEC. The spotlight on KC intensified due to the ardent support of their fans, creating an atmosphere of eager anticipation for their debut in the competitive LEC arena.

After the match against MAD Lions KOI, the head coach stressed the importance of allowing players to “digest the moment” before rushing into post-match discussions, highlighting the psychological impact a 0-3 start can have while underlining the need to separate oneself from the “heavyweight” of the scoreboard.

Using the “exposure of [KC’s] weaknesses” as a foundation for the team’s improvement, YamatoCannon pointed at discipline and “great determination” as the factors needed to face the challenges head-on. “We can choose to make this 0-3 weekend the biggest blessing that we could have possibly gotten,” he said.

The head coach underlined there are six more games to play before the end of the regular season, and the team can emerge stronger from their current position. In the face of a “ruthless” regular season marked by best-of-ones and a new patch, YamatoCannon highlighted the necessity of “bouncing back quick” by putting in the work and making the most of the time between the end of the first week and the start of the next one.

KC at the 2024 LEC Winter Split Week 1 - Photo by Wojciech Wandzel/Riot Games

And while there is a “long list” of improvements the team needs to make, he acknowledged the impact of recent patch changes had on KC’s draft. But despite the need to retrace draft strategies and make macro decision-making improvements, YamatoCannon expressed confidence in his team’s ability to overcome the situation.

“We need to bring forward a higher level of trust for each other and a higher level of confidence,” he said, ”because I think that we are a lot more capable than what we’ve shown.” Now, with “a lot more data” to work with, the focus heading into the second week of the 2024 LEC Winter Split will be put on how KC can become “more headstrong” while maintaining that trust and making sure that it translates on the Rift against their opponents.

As Karmine Corp faces the challenge of a winless start to the LEC season, YamatoCannon’s pragmatic approach and commitment to the team’s improvement paint a hopeful picture for the blue wall of fans following the team’s journey into the league.

Rams’ 2024 Offseason Outlook: Free Agents, Targets, and Draft Needs Following NFL Playoff Defeat

The Los Angeles Rams defied expectations in the recent NFL season, surpassing predictions of a rebuilding year to clinch a wild-card berth. With a seasoned core and emerging young talent, they secured the No. 6 seed, finishing the season with 10 wins after a five-win performance the previous year. Despite the success, their playoff journey ended abruptly with a 24-23 loss to the Detroit Lions in the NFC Wild Card Game.

Key contributors included returning stars Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald, and Cooper Kupp, along with surprising performances from rookies Puka Nacua and Kobie Turner. The 2023 season potentially marked the start of a new era rather than a rebuilding phase, offering optimism for the future.

Rams' 2024 Offseason Outlook: Free Agents, Targets, and Draft Needs Following NFL Playoff Defeat

Looking ahead to the offseason, the Rams face decisions on free agents, with notable names like Tremayne Anchrum, Kevin Dotson, Jordan Fuller, and others. While their core veterans are under contract, retaining key players like offensive tackle Alaric Jackson is crucial.

Financially, the Rams are in a favorable position with a projected $48.2 million in cap space, allowing flexibility in retaining talent and exploring potential free-agent or trade targets. The approach may hinge on whether they opt for a youth movement or aim for another Super Bowl run, considering Stafford’s age and contract status.

Potential targets in free agency or trades include veterans on expiring contracts, such as Khalil Mack, Mike Williams, or Justin Simmons. Alternatively, pursuing ascending players like Jaylon Johnson or L’Jarius Sneed could address positional needs, especially in the secondary.

The upcoming draft holds significance for the Rams, featuring a first-round selection for the first time since 2016. Considering the success of the 2023 draft, they may trade picks for more late-round capital but will likely focus on key needs early. A playmaking cornerback or a pass-rusher could be on the radar, with prospects like Kool-Aid McKinstry and JT Tuimoloau standing out.

Defensive backfield improvements remain a priority, making prospects like Calen Bullock and Kamari Lassiter potential Day 2 considerations. Depending on free agency outcomes, the Rams might target additional pass-catching options, with receivers like Tee Higgins and tight ends like Bryson Nesbit as potential late-round interests.

In summary, the Rams have an opportunity to build on their success, making strategic moves in free agency and the draft to solidify their roster for the upcoming season.

MLB Rumors: Blake Snell Eyeing $240 Million Contract in Free Agency Following NL Cy Young Award Win

National League Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell is the top remaining pitcher on the free-agent market, but he reportedly isn’t planning on giving any team a discount in negotiations.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Snell “continues to seek a contract that will pay him at least $240 million, and now awaits to see what team blinks first.”

Nightengale noted that the New York Yankees “made an introductory offer for nearly $100 million less” than what Snell is seeking, and it was “quickly dismissed” before the team pivoted to signing Marcus Stroman to a two-year, $37 million deal last week. There are reportedly “several teams” that are “engaged with Snell while seeing if his price tag drops,” with the Toronto Blue Jays particularly named to be “quietly monitoring his free agency.”

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported in late December that Snell had also drawn interest from the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants, and Los Angeles Angels, among others. However, it won’t be easy to get him to reduce his asking price after his impressive 2023 campaign.

Snell started a career-high 32 games for the San Diego Padres in 2023 and went 14-9 with a 2.25 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP, and a career-high 234 strikeouts in 180.0 innings of work. He’s now the seventh player in MLB history to win Cy Young Awards in both leagues, having won the AL Cy Young in 2018 when he was a member of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Snell undoubtedly would be a major addition to any starting rotation, so it will be interesting to see where he lands this winter.

Magomed Ankalaev Issues a Caution to UFC Champion Alex Pereira: “He’s not going to feel comfortable”

During the UFC Vegas 84 post-fight press conference, Magomed Ankalaev said he wanted to make a statement in his bout with Johnny Walker. He also expressed his belief that he could defeat Alex Pereira at his own game.

“I could have come out here today and wrestled against Johnny Walker,” Ankalaev said via a Russian translator. “I could have taken him down right away and won with my ground-and-pound on the ground, but instead, I wanted to send a message. I wanted to stand up, and I wanted to knock him out, and that’s what I did.

“Now, for Glover Teixeira, I have a message. Don’t waste your time trying to teach your student how to wrestle or grapple, and he’s not going to need it. I’m going to come out there, I’m going to stand across from him, and I know that he’s been knocked out before as a middleweight, so imagine what’s going to happen if I meet him in light heavyweight. Trust me, he’s not going to feel comfortable there.”

Jamahal Hill is the clear number-one contender for Pereira’s championship, but the issue is whether or not “Sweet Dreams” can recover in time to align with the UFC’s schedule. Hill relinquished the UFC light heavyweight title after suffering a ruptured Achilles.

Fans Criticize Anthony Davis’ Shooting Performance as Lakers Fall to Jazz in the Absence of LeBron James

It was a tough night for the Los Angeles Lakers.

With LeBron James out with an ankle injury, the Lakers were hoping to rely on Anthony Davis and company to power the team to a win over a Utah Jazz team that it is jockeying for position within the Western Conference standings.

Unfortunately for Los Angeles, it just wasn’t enough.

Los Angeles Lakers @Lakers

Final from Utah

The 132-125 loss dropped the Lakers to 19-20 on the season while allowing the Jazz to remain in front in the standings as it improved to 20-20. The Lakers are currently in 11th place in the Western Conference and would be the first team out of the Play-In Tournament.

D’Angelo Russell was a bright spot for the Lakers in the game, scoring 39 points with eight assists and three rebounds. Austin Reaves contributed 19 points, Rui Hachimura had 17 off the bench, and Christian Wood contributed 15 from the bench.

However, the most polarizing day came from Davis. He had a triple-double, scoring 15 points, grabbing 15 rebounds, and dishing out 11 assists. While that appears impressive at the outset, the base stats do not tell the whole story.

He had an extremely rough shooting day, going 5-of-21 on field goals. This inefficiency certainly played a major role in the final score not going the Lakers’ way and dimming the otherwise solid stat line.

Fans on social media expressed frustration with Davis’s shooting struggles and viewed his stat line as a weak triple-double.

🐍HoodiiMamba 🐍 @HoodiiMamba

i think its time we officially remove Anthony Davis from Top 3 PF/Center Talks

The loss and related drop in the standings is certainly concerning for a Lakers team with high hopes, but a few pickups at the deadline could certainly make a difference.

Los Angeles will look to rebound Sunday when it hosts the Oklahoma City Thunder at 10:30 P.M. ET.

Tyreek Hill Urges Dolphins to Avoid Being Front Runners After Playoff Loss to Chiefs

Tyreek Hill believes his team is capable of winning a Super Bowl, but he says some things need to change next season.

The Miami Dolphins fell short in their wild-card matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, 26-7, marking a second-straight wild-card exit. Hill believes the offense needs to step up in big moments, per the Palm Beach Post’s Joe Schad.

“This is the right group of people to win a chip,” Hill said. “We have to put together drives to help the defense out. We can’t just be a bunch of front runners.”

Tyreek Hill
Tyreek Hill (Credits: NFL)

Miami’s offense, which was dominant all season, struggled on Saturday. The Dolphins had just 264 yards of total offense and found the endzone just one time. Moving forward, the offense will need to be consistent if Miami wants to be a serious contender.

While the Dolphins put together a solid 11-6 season, they struggled against the league’s best teams. They had just one win against a playoff team this year, beating the Dallas Cowboys 22-20 in Week 16. One of the common denominators in Miami’s losses was a struggling offense. The Dolphins had 20 or fewer points in five of their six losses this season, while they averaged 29.2 points per game this year, which was the second-highest total in the NFL.

Hill struggled in Miami’s losses this season as well. Despite leading the NFL in receiving yards this season with 1,799 yards, he failed to reach the 100-yard mark in all six of the Dolphins’ regular-season losses. He had 62 yards, and Miami’s only touchdown was on Saturday.

The Dolphins showed promise this season, and they still have plenty of room to grow — quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was playing in his first playoff game on Saturday — but Hill’s concerns about the team being front runners are valid, and they will look to address those concerns this offseason.

Dolphins’ Mike McDaniel: Chiefs ‘Outcoached Us, Outplayed Us’ in ‘Gut-Wrenching’ Loss

The Miami Dolphins were eliminated from the playoffs on Saturday night with a 26-7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Wild Card round at Arrowhead Stadium, and the loss was particularly hard on head coach Mike McDaniel.

“They beat us, out-coached us, outplayed us,” McDaniel told reporters after the loss.

He added: “We came here to win, and it didn’t happen. We had high expectations for ourselves. It’s emotional. It’s gut-wrenching.”

The Dolphins put together a solid regular season behind a high-powered offense led by Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill, going 11-6 to secure a playoff berth for the second straight season.

Mike McDaniel
Mike McDaniel (Credits: Essentially Sports)

However, Miami’s offense fizzled out while playing in subzero temperatures at Arrowhead Stadium.

Tagovailoa, who led the NFL in passing yards and averaged 272 passing yards per game during the regular season, threw for just 199 yards and one touchdown against one interception against the Chiefs.

The Alabama product is now 1-7 in his career while playing in temperatures below 50 degrees, which is unacceptable.

That said, McDaniel told reporters after the game that Tagovailoa isn’t being blamed for the loss.

“Everyone has to get better. We’re not blaming one player. Some good plays. Some bad plays. Some good calls. Some calls to have back,” McDaniel said. “For this unit, seven points isn’t good enough. We need to learn and try to take another step.”

While the Dolphins finished the season with a winning record and secured a playoff berth, one of the biggest questions surrounding the team throughout the entire 2023 campaign was whether or not they could beat a team with a .500 record or better.

They beat the Dallas Cowboys 22-20 on Christmas Eve to silence some of those doubts, but with Saturday’s loss, the Dolphins closed out the season 1-6 against playoff teams, which is highly disappointing.

Additionally, the Dolphins haven’t made it past the Wild Card round since the 2000 season.

Miami now enters the offseason with several questions to answer, one of which should be how it can improve an offense that is already so potent.

Auburn Stuns No. 7 LSU, Securing a 67-62 Victory Despite Double-Doubles from Angel Reese and Aneesah Morrow.

Auburn secured its first SEC victory of the season in dazzling fashion. The Tigers upset No. 7 LSU, 67-62, at home in front of a record-breaking crowd on Sunday to snap LSU’s 16-game winning streak. It’s the second time in Auburn program history it has taken down a top-10 team.

Flau’jae Johnson hit a jumper off a steal to pull LSU within two, 64-62, with 1:39 remaining. Kaitlyn Duhon and Jamya Mingo-Young each secured big offensive rebounds as Auburn killed a full minute of the clock on the other end. Mingo-Young secured a steal off Angel Reese and hit both free throws to secure the victory.

Auburn Stuns No. 7 LSU, Securing a 67-62 Victory Despite Double-Doubles from Angel Reese and Aneesah Morrow.

Each side of the Tigers exchanged quarters in the first half, with Auburn winning the first 23-15 and LSU the second 22-11. It was a tight affair from there, with seven lead changes as Auburn (12-5, 1-3 SEC) did enough to pull off a signature win. LSU is 16-2 overall and 3-1 in SEC play. The reigning champions hadn’t dropped a game since the season opener to Colorado.

Honesty Scott-Grayson scored a team-high 21 points with five rebounds and two assists. Mingo-Young added 13 with five assists and three rebounds. It was a team-wide effort as nine of 10 players who saw minutes scored at least a bucket. They kept up on the boards, 36-34, and four different players hit from 3.

Reese led all scorers with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Aneesah Morrow also had a double-double of 12 points and 15 rebounds. The Tigers controlled the paint points, 42-28.

How LSU lost to Auburn

LSU needed more from its backcourt and missed the big-game production of freshman guard Mikaylah Williams.

Williams is averaging 16.9 ppg, ranking third on LSU behind Reese (19.8) and Morrow (18.6). She’s a 50% shooter and LSU’s best threat from range at 45.1% from beyond the arc. Her production from day 1 for LSU has been key and crucial in replacing point guard Alexis Morris’ production on the 2022-23 title team.

She never found her shot against Auburn and finished with seven points shooting 30%. She missed the only 3-pointer she attempted, and the team went 0-for-2 from distance. They’re not a top 3-point shooting team, but collectively hit about four per game. It was the first time this year LSU had not made a 3; its previous low was two in games against Virginia and Northwestern State.

Hailey Van Lith, the transfer from Louisville, also struggled and was 1-of-9 for three points. Johnson scored 12 points, shooting 4-of-8, the best outing of the day for LSU. The Tigers couldn’t hit as well from the free-throw line, either. They were 10 percentage points below their average (16 of 25) overall, going 6 of 10 in the fourth quarter. Offensively, they went 2-of-11 from the field in the final frame.

LSU travels to Alabama for a Thursday game and hosts Arkansas on Sunday in Baton Rouge. The Tigers host No. 1 South Carolina (15-0, 3-0 SEC) on Thursday, Jan. 25, in a game that could decide the SEC title.
