Exploring the Bears’ Quest for an Offensive Coordinator: Interviewed Candidates Thus Far

The Chicago Bears fired offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and five other coaches just days ago, but so far, they’ve reportedly cast a wide net in their search for a new leader.

According to reports, the Bears have interviewed at least four candidates for the position in the four days since Getsy’s dismissal.

Shane Waldron – Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator

Waldron, 44, is the current offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks. Seeing, however, that Pete Carroll is no longer the head coach in Seattle, the replacement would likely jettison Waldron.

Waldron has been Seattle’s OC since 2021. Before then, he was the passing game coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams. He spent 2017-20 with the Rams. He was also an operations assistant with the New England Patriots, with whom he won two Super Bowls.

Under Waldron, Seattle has ranked 16th, 10th, and 17th in scoring offense. They have ranked 24th, 12th, and 14th in passing yards per game. Waldron received a lot of praise for his work with Geno Smith in 2022 when the quarterback won the Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Klint Kubiak – San Francisco 49ers passing game coordinator

Kubiak, 36, is the current passing game coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers. He’s been an offensive coordinator before; he was the OC for the Minnesota Vikings in 2021. He also spent the 2022 season as the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the Denver Broncos. He’s the son of longtime NFL coach Gary Kubiak.

Kubiak took over as the 49ers’ passing game coordinator this season after Bobby Slowik left to become the Houston Texans’ offensive coordinator. Kubiak is thought of highly in league circles. He is seen as a cerebral offensive mind, much like his father, Gary Kubiak, and has had some experience as a play-caller after taking over the duties down the stretch for the Denver Broncos last season.

The Shanahan/Kubiak tree has had a lot of successful branches in the NFL. League evaluators view Kubiak as integral to Brock Purdy’s superb season.

Greg Olson – Seattle Seahawks quarterbacks

Olson, 60, is the current quarterbacks coach for the Seahawks. He was the former quarterbacks coach for the Bears, in fact, in 2003. He’s been in the NFL coaching sphere since 2001 with a wealth of experience.

He’s been an offensive coordinator before. He led the offense for the Detroit Lions (2004-05), St. Louis Rams (2006-07), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2009-11), Oakland Raiders (2013-14), Jacksonville Jaguars (2015-16) and the Las Vegas Raiders (second stint; 2018-21).

Liam Coen – Kentucky Football offensive coordinator

Coen, 38, has predominantly worked in the college football space since 2010. Kentucky is the fifth university he’s worked at, with an array of positions outside of offensive coordinator.

He was the offensive coordinator for the Rams in 2022. That season, the Rams owned the 27th-ranked offense in the NFL, posting 18.1 points per game. This season, in 2023, the Rams have the 8th-best offense in the league since Coen’s departure.

In his defense, he’s greatly improved Kentucky’s offense, bringing them to the No. 50 offense in the country, which is a great improvement from their 111th-ranked offense last season.

Coen is the third offensive coordinator candidate the Bears will interview, according to reports. The Bears will also interview Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and San Francisco 49ers passing game coordinator Klint Kubiak.

Negotiations Continue Between Jim Harbaugh and Michigan for New Contract Amidst Ongoing NFL Speculation

Jim Harbaugh’s annual flirtation with the NFL has once again spurred the University of Michigan into action with the hope of retaining him as head football coach.

Per NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, Harbaugh and Michigan are in ongoing negotiations about a new contract as he ponders head-coaching jobs in the NFL.

Rapoport and Pelissero noted Harbaugh is believed to have an interview scheduled with the Los Angeles Chargers sometime next week, while the Las Vegas Raiders are weighing a potential pursuit of the 60-year-old.

Rapoport reported on Christmas Eve that Michigan had two different offers on the table for Harbaugh. One of them was a 10-year, $125 million deal with a clause prohibiting him from entertaining or accepting an NFL coaching job in 2024.

The second offer was “far shorter” than that one and was worth about $11 million per season.

It’s unclear if Michigan has changed those proposals to Harbaugh, though his leverage has certainly increased after leading the Wolverines to a national title this season for the first time in 26 years.

Rapoport and Pelissero noted Michigan’s efforts to sign Harbaugh comes “in light of other recent movement within college football.”

Washington, which lost to Michigan in the College Football Playoff Championship Game on Monday, has to replace Kalen DeBoer. He was announced as Alabama’s new head coach on Friday after Nick Saban retired earlier in the week.

The Raiders’ interest in Harbaugh may not be strong enough to push him ahead of Antonio Pierce. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Saturday that Pierce is considered the leading candidate for Las Vegas, and the team hasn’t interviewed anyone else at this point.

Michigan has every reason to want to keep Harbaugh. He’s led the program to three consecutive Big Ten titles and appearances in the College Football Playoff, including this year’s title victory.

The Wolverines have defeated Ohio State in each of the past three years. They lost eight consecutive games in the rivalry from 2012 to ’19.

Michigan went 46-42 with one 10-win season in seven combined years with Rich Rodriguez and Brady Hoke from 2008 to ’14. Harbaugh is 89-25 with six 10-win seasons since taking over in 2015.

SMITE 2’s All-New Esports Framework Revealed

Recently, MOBA fans around the world rejoiced as SMITE 2 was announced, some ten years after the release of the first game. Penned as an entirely standalone product that won’t replace SMITE, SMITE 2 has been painstakingly constructed in full in Unreal Engine 5. It’s being marketed as a ‘true sequel’ to SMITE, which was released back in 2014 and has enjoyed a consistently well-populated community since then.

Titan Forge Games revealed SMITE 2 ahead of the Smite World Championship tournament – the tenth anniversary of the competition. That has been playing out this weekend, but as the action has unraveled, more information has been revealed about SMITE 2, including how the game’s esports ecosystem will work.

SMITE 2 Esports Are Coming

There’s a closed alpha that’s shaping up to be rolled out to fans around the world, and pre-alpha footage is already looking impressive. It’ll be a huge ask for SMITE 2 to contend with the leaders of the MOBA niche, such as League of Legends or Dota 2, but what’s coming already looks great.

In a line, Titan Forge promised that SMITE 2 would have ‘more godlike impact, strategy, and creativity than ever before,’ marking high expectations for the project.

It was since revealed that SMITE 2 will boast Major tournaments that are ‘held in front of a live audience around the world.’ When SMITE 2 is released, it’ll kickstart an esports ecosystem that’ll see at least one major event being played in the United States and one taking place in Europe or the United Kingdom.

That itself is a huge win, as while esports events in the United Kingdom are on the rise, they’re still yet to reach lofty heights. In 2024, the BLAST Premier Spring Final and the League of Legends World Championship will be making their way to London, but many esports games have yet to set foot on British soil.

There are high hopes that SMITE 2 will give MOBA fans something else to focus on away from the powerhouse titles that are League of Legends and Dota 2. That could be the case, as SMITE doesn’t conform to the traditional standards of a MOBA in terms of how it’s played. At the end of the day, innovation is never a bad thing.

There’s no release date for SMITE 2 at present, but we know it’s going to be released on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, with the multi-platform approach adding another unique arrow to SMITE 2’s quiver.

As Suarez prepares for his debut season in Major League Soccer (MLS), fans are eager to see how well the veteran striker performs for Inter Miami. Reports Indicate Bears Considering Caleb Williams or Another Quarterback in Early Draft Assessments

The Chicago Bears are heading into a pivotal offseason with a litany of major decisions in front of them. One decision is no larger than whether or not they prefer to return Justin Fields or draft a new quarterback.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler shed light on the early belief of the Bears’ preferences at this point.

“I have talked to some people in and around the program who believe they will eventually land on a Caleb Williams or a quarterback at No. 1, but it still has to be sorted out,” Fowler said on ESPN.

Fowler mentioned the Bears are in the early stages of their evaluations of all players, including the top quarterbacks. To Fowler, that includes “character studies, deep film work, etc.”

Caleb Williams
Caleb Williams

Ryan Poles expressed the same about the current stage of their offseason work during the team’s end-of-season press conference on Wednesday.

“We are in information-gathering mode right now,” Poles said of the Bears’ upcoming quarterback decision. “We are going to turn over every stone to make sure that we are going to make a sound decision for our organization. I did think Justin got better. I think he can lead this team. But at the same time, there’s a unique situation where I have to look, and our staff has to look at everything. And that’s exactly what we’re gonna do.”

Fowler also said most people around the league feel Williams is the top quarterback in the draft. For what it’s worth, he hasn’t yet declared for the NFL draft. Williams has until Jan. 15 to declare for the 2024 NFL draft or return to USC.

Fowler also mentioned that Justin Fields has truly given them a lot to think about. He’s made the decision much harder on the Bears. With that, Ryan Poles is faced with a tenure-defining decision that will alter the Bears franchise.

The Bears have the No. 1 pick for a second-straight season in their arsenal. For what it’s worth, they also own the No. 9 pick by their own 7-10 regular season record.

Last season, the Bears opted to roll with Fields, passing on the 2023 quarterback class that included Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, Anthony Richardson, Will Levis, etc. The jury is still out on most of these signal-callers, but Stroud appears to be a hit.

Are the Bears confident in their ability to scout quarterbacks, seeing as one seemingly fell through the cracks?

“I’ll actually go back to last year, and I’ve got to stay open-minded about it,” Poles said. “Not to use the same quote, but I want to say I need to be blown away. It’s the same setup because seeing the things that Justin did this year, his ability to make plays, the coach talked about some of those improvements, keeping his eyes down the field, taking fewer sacks, you see a lot of growth there where he can continue to get better.

“So I’ll have the same mindset: someone needs to really show that they can … and it’s not just the film. I need the person. There’s a whole process here that we have to figure out. But what we’re going to do is do what’s best for the organization. I’m sure there’s going to be similar situations in terms of the trade back, and I’ve got to weigh all those things to see what’s going to help our team take the next step.”

Ricky Brabec, an American, Takes the Lead in Dakar Rally Beyond the Halfway Mark

As the 46th edition of the Dakar Rally enters its single rest day, the Monster Energy Honda team is positioned well in the motorcycle category, with CRF450 RALLY-mounted American Ricky Brabec sitting first overall and teammates Adrien Van Beveren and Jose Ignacio “Nacho” Cornejo also in the top five positions.

Friday marked the completion of the “48 Hour Chrono” stage, which was won by Frenchman Van Beveren, a sand specialist. A new addition to the Dakar Rally, the two-day stage took place in the dunes of Saudi Arabia’s desolate Empty Quarter and featured a remote overnight, with no contact with the outside world and no technical support. Making it through the 519-mile stage in a strong position was expected to be key to earning the overall win, so Honda completed an important hurdle as the rally cleared its midway point.

Thus far, riders have completed eight days and 2,560 miles in the event, which takes place entirely in Saudi Arabia. Following Saturday’s break-in Riyadh, a total of six stages and 2,309 miles remain, with the rally set to finish in Yanbu on January 19.

“There was a lot of time in the dunes, but I didn’t mind that as the challenge of going for many hours and kilometers made it a lot of fun,” Brabec said at the end of the 48-Hour Chrono stage. “Camping with the boys was a blast; we had a really good time last night, although we didn’t get much sleep. The stage was 100% dune, but it was really cool, and I hope they do something like this again.

Rocks and open deserts are a bit better for me, and with the dunes, I really pushed, but I also played it safe towards the end as I didn’t want to ‘open’ stage 7. I’m in a good place going into next week, so let’s see what happens in the next six days.”

Brabec has a 51-second lead over second-place Evan Ross Branch, with his teammate Van Beveren a bit over 9 minutes back and Chilean Cornejo a little over 14 minutes behind the American. Chilean Honda rider Pablo Quintanilla sits in 11th overall after losing time when he ran out of fuel in the Chrono section.

As is common in the Dakar Rally, the team has unfortunately been reduced in the first week, with two riders withdrawing from the race—American Skyler Howes with a technical issue and Spaniard Tosha Schareina after fracturing his wrist in a fall.

“I’m gutted to have to exit the rally early,” Howes said. “After a less-than-ideal start, I was looking forward to the Chrono stage and the second week to claw back the time that I lost in the first couple of days. The issue that took me out is nobody’s fault—not mine, the mechanics, or the team.

When you’re pushing at the maximum level for this many days, luck has a big part to play, and yesterday, I drew the short stick. Sometimes, this happens in racing, and all we can do is learn from it. Now, I’m looking forward to the year ahead and focusing on being better. Failure and adversity can be the best teacher, one I’m familiar with.”

The rally resumes on Sunday with a 542-mile stage from Riyadh to Al Duwadimi.

Ngannou’s Quest for Redemption: Insists ‘Tyson Owes Me a Fight’ in Tenacious Fury Rematch Pursuit

Francis Ngannou is determined to face Anthony Joshua, but regardless of their future careers, the former UFC heavyweight champion believes that Tyson Fury owes him a rematch.

In October, Ngannou suffered a narrow split decision loss to Fury in his professional boxing debut. However, he managed to knock down the ‘Gypsy King’ with a powerful left hook in the third round of their fight in Saudi Arabia. This surprising performance earned Ngannou another significant payday and a fight against Anthony Joshua, also in Saudi Arabia, in a couple of months.

Despite facing Oleksandr Usyk in a title unification fight in February, Fury remains a target for Ngannou, regardless of the outcome of his battle against Usyk.

“I’m not interested in the winner of Tyson Fury and Usyk,” Ngannou told TMZ regarding his plans after facing Joshua. “I’m after Tyson. Tyson owes me a fight. I don’t care about the winner of Usyk and Tyson. I want Tyson, whether he wins or loses.”

How Team Fury will respond to this challenge remains to be seen, especially considering the difficulties they faced in their first fight. However, Ngannou believes that Fury now has a better understanding of his boxing style after spending 30 minutes in the ring with him.

“He’s already seen me box, so he has an idea of what to expect,” Ngannou explained. “Unlike Tyson Fury, who had no clue what to expect. Joshua kind of knows what to expect. This time, I need to step up even more to get the job done.”

Approaching the Joshua fight with a professional record of 0-1, Ngannou acknowledges that the British boxer is the clear favorite to win.

“I’m going up against a former champion, a guy who has been in the game for a long time, winning and all that,” Ngannou said about his upcoming opponent. “He has a record of 30-something wins, and I’m 0-1. Come on, man. How can they make me the favorite?”

Ngannou and Joshua are scheduled to fight on Friday, March 8, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Charlie Culberson: From Utility Player to Pitching Prodigy – A Remarkable Career Transition

Charlie Culberson, a utility man who has played in parts of 11 MLB seasons, is set to make a late-career shift to the mound. According to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, Culberson will attend the Braves’ Minor League camp as a pitcher. The club has not yet confirmed this report.

Culberson, 34, does have some pitching experience in the Majors. He has thrown 7 1/3 innings across eight appearances, allowing one run on seven hits with one strikeout and three walks. In 2023, he also threw 3 2/3 innings for Triple-A Gwinnett.

In his MLB pitching appearances, Culberson has reached a top speed of 93.7 mph. However, most of his pitching opportunities have come in mop-up situations during blowout games.

Throughout his career, Culberson has played at every position on the diamond except for catcher and center fielder. He has spent time with the Giants, Rockies, Dodgers, Braves, and Rangers since his debut in 2012. However, in 2023, he only played one MLB game, making a bench appearance for the Braves in July.

There have been similar cases of players transitioning to pitching later in their careers. Jason Lane, who played as an outfielder for the Astros and Padres from 2002-07, returned to the field as a pitcher for the Padres in 2014, throwing 10 1/3 innings with a 0.87 ERA over three appearances. Anthony Gose also made a successful transition, pitching for the Guardians in 2021-22 after previously playing as an outfielder for the Blue Jays and Tigers from 2012-16. Gose, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022, is currently signed with Cleveland on a Minor League deal.

AlphaTauri’s Strategic Roadmap: Balancing Experience and Emerging Talent in the Pursuit of Formula 1 Success

AlphaTauri, the upcoming Racing Bulls team, under the leadership of CEO Peter Bayer, is set to maintain its pivotal role in nurturing young talent for Red Bull and Red Bull Racing in Formula 1. While the Faenza-based team is dedicated to enhancing its performance, Bayer suggests the possibility of incorporating more seasoned drivers into the lineup for an extended period. The development of young drivers remains a cornerstone of the team’s philosophy, and Bayer underscores the importance of finding a balance between team progress and driver development, aiming to prevent an excess of inexperience within the team simultaneously.

Bayer expresses interest in the trend of competitors recruiting talented drivers from karting and questions the necessity of such a broad talent pyramid. Helmut Marko, in charge of the team’s driver decisions, plays a crucial role in steering AlphaTauri’s approach. With a solid foundation laid by Franz Tost and support from external consultants and Red Bull’s headquarters in Salzburg, AlphaTauri is in a favorable position to embark on a new chapter. The decision-making process involves key figures like Oliver Mintzlaff, Franz Tost, and Christian Horner, but the ultimate authority rests with Marko.

Highlighting the positive impact of experienced drivers, such as Daniel Ricciardo, Bayer emphasizes their role in providing energy and serving as references for younger talents like Yuki Tsunoda. The decision to bring Ricciardo on board was the result of discussions with Christian Horner and Helmut Marko. Discussing Mick Schumacher, Bayer acknowledges his challenging situation and points to his longstanding relationship with Sabine Kehm, Schumacher’s manager. Each driver is assigned to a specific plan, with Liam Lawson being another young talent under close scrutiny.

Bayer reiterates that AlphaTauri’s ultimate goal is a sporting success, emphasizing the quest for the perfect balance between experienced and young drivers. He believes that Schumacher’s challenge lies in proving his speed and talent on the Formula 1 stage.

NASCAR Unveils Exciting 2024 Short Track/Road Course Package: A Thrilling Twist to the Racing Experience!

NASCAR confirmed Wednesday that Cup teams are receiving a rulebook bulletin detailing the updates to the Next Gen car for all road courses and most oval tracks measuring 1.058 miles or less in the distance.

Cup cars will run a simplified diffuser along with a handful of other updates. This change comes following driver feedback from a test at Phoenix in early December.

Details of the components include:

  • 2023 short track/road course splitter stuffers
  • No engine panel strakes
  • 3-inch spoiler
  • Simplified Diffuser
  • Simplified Diffuser Strakes

The simplified diffuser will not be used at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for the preseason, non-points Busch Light Clash.

“At the test, we noticed an improvement in traffic. The car did not lose rear downforce when it yawed, which is an issue we have with the current car. The drivers would be able to slide around more on the short tracks and really have to be less careful about putting power down,” said Eric Jacuzzi, NASCAR’s vice president of vehicle performance.

“We felt that would be a benefit, and that was the big takeaway from the driver feedback. At the test, they felt they could really tell that it was more forgiving. They felt they could slide the car.”

The first race with the new package will take place on March 10 at Phoenix.
