Baltimore Orioles pitcher Albert Suárez and second baseman Jorge Mateo were injured in consecutive plays during the third inning of a 6-3 loss to the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.

Mateo collided with shortstop Gunnar Henderson while both were diving for a grounder hit by Jesús Sánchez behind second base. Sánchez reached base with a single. Mateo initially got up but then fell back to the ground in pain, favoring his left arm.

He was attended to by an Orioles athletic trainer, and the team reported he had pain in his left elbow.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde mentioned that X-rays for Mateo were negative, but he will undergo an MRI to further evaluate the injury.

“Jorge is an important player for us, so we’re hoping for the best,” Hyde commented.

Following Mateo’s injury, Jordan Westburg moved from third base to second, and Ramón Urías entered the game at third, batting ninth.

On the next play, a hard-hit comebacker by Otto López struck Suárez’s right foot and deflected towards the Marlins’ dugout, resulting in a single that loaded the bases. Hyde and a trainer came out to check on Suárez, who sustained a left shin contusion.

“The pain is worse now than when I was hit. The adrenaline has worn off,” Suárez said. “Fortunately, the X-rays were negative. It’s just swollen.”

Suárez ended up allowing six runs and eight hits in two-plus innings before being replaced by Keegan Akin.
