All-Star baseball players Alex Bregman and Walker Buehler have teamed up as owners of a 3-year-old colt that won for the first time at Santa Anita on Friday.
The horse, March of Time, beat four competitors by 2 1/4 lengths in a six-furlong sprint race for horses that had never won. The race had a $60,000 prize, reflecting the quality of the horses involved.
Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, March of Time was the favorite and paid $4.60 to win. The colt took the lead in the upper stretch and pulled ahead of the second-place finisher, Santarena, with a furlong left.
March of Time is sired by Justify, the 2018 Triple Crown winner trained by Baffert.
In addition to Bregman and Buehler, the colt’s other owner is Baffert’s wife, Jill. Buehler, a free-agent pitcher who helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win the World Series this year, is a longtime friend of the Bafferts.
Bregman, also a free agent, spent the past nine seasons with the Houston Astros, helping them win two World Series titles.
Before being owned by Bregman, Buehler, and Baffert, March of Time was owned by the prominent group Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier, and Derrick Smith of Coolmore. The colt finished second in his debut race a year ago.
