Boston’s third baseman Rafael Devers was removed from the starting lineup due to soreness in his left shoulder before Friday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners, where the Red Sox lost 1-0.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora mentioned that Devers felt some discomfort early in the day and experienced stiffness after batting practice. Cora decided to rest Devers as a precautionary measure, stating that Devers is considered day-to-day.
“He wasn’t feeling great throughout the day,” Cora explained.
“Let’s be cautious; it’s only the second game of the season. Hopefully, he’ll be ready to play tomorrow, and if not, we’ll give him one more day.”
Devers had hit a home run and a double in Boston’s opening-day win on Thursday. Last season, he led the Red Sox in hits (157), home runs (33), and RBIs (100).
Bobby Dalbec took Devers’ place in the lineup. Dalbec didn’t play in Boston’s first game and went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts on Friday.
