Chris Bassitt pitched until the seventh inning to win his second consecutive start. Alejandro Kirk reached base three times as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Yankees 3-1 on Monday night, marking the first time this season that New York has lost two games in a row.
“We’re not pleased about it, but it’s something that happened,” said infielder Oswaldo Cabrera, who drove in New York’s only run. “We’re just preparing for tomorrow’s game.”
New York, with a record of 12-5, suffered an 8-7 loss to Cleveland on Sunday, where the Guardians scored three runs in the 10th inning.
This is the second time the Yankees have lost the opening game of a series in six attempts, and both losses were against the Blue Jays. Toronto previously won 3-0 in New York’s home opener on April 5.
Bassitt, with a record of 2-2, allowed only one run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings, helping Toronto extend their winning streak to three games, the longest of the season so far.
“It’s a very tough lineup, but we had a game plan and stuck to it,” he said.
The right-hander walked two batters and struck out five, ending his outing by striking out Gleyber Torres. Bassitt now boasts a 2-0 record with a 1.00 ERA in four career starts against the Yankees.
“He’s the epitome of the kitchen sink — he’ll throw everything,” New York manager Aaron Boone remarked.
