Simply put, Bayer Leverkusen’s coach Xabi Alonso has witnessed his team pull off numerous astonishing comebacks this season, keeping them undefeated in all matches.
Leverkusen, already crowned Bundesliga champions, has gone 46 games without a loss, a feat unmatched in Europe’s major leagues.
The team’s resilience has been remarkable. In their latest match against Stuttgart, Robert Andrich scored in extra time to salvage a 2-2 draw, even though the game was supposed to end a minute earlier.
Stuttgart had a comfortable 2-0 lead, but Leverkusen’s never-say-die attitude led to another comeback, continuing their unbeaten streak.
In previous games, Leverkusen secured draws with late goals, like Josip Stanišić’s equalizer against Borussia Dortmund and Amine Adli’s goal against West Ham in the Europa League.
Leverkusen has a total of eight draws this season alongside 38 victories.
Reflecting on the dramatic finishes, Adli admitted they should aim to score earlier. However, these late goals have become a trademark for Leverkusen, with 16 scored in the 90th minute or later this season.
Alonso acknowledged the unpredictability of these last-minute heroics but acknowledged their positive impact on the team.
Thanks to such performances, Leverkusen clinched the Bundesliga title ahead of perennial champions Bayern Munich, with five games to spare.
