Bayern Munich’s attempt to reclaim the Bundesliga title from Bayer Leverkusen began on Sunday with a tough 3-2 victory at Wolfsburg.

Serge Gnabry scored the decisive goal late in the match after Bayern had let Wolfsburg come from behind to take a 2-1 lead early in the second half.

Vincent Kompany made his debut as coach, and Michael Olise started for his new team. However, it was Thomas Müller, a long-time Bayern player, who made a significant impact by coming on as a substitute for his 474th Bundesliga appearance, setting a club record.

The 34-year-old Müller had an immediate impact when he entered in the 65th minute. His presence led to an own-goal by Jakub Kaminski from a corner, which leveled the score for Bayern.

Müller was involved again when Gnabry scored the winning goal in the 82nd minute. Müller passed the ball to Harry Kane, who then assisted Gnabry.

Wolfsburg started the match strongly, not giving Bayern much time on the ball. But Bayern gradually found their rhythm, and Jamal Musiala broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when Sacha Boey crossed the ball from the right after getting past Kaminski. Kaminski, who usually plays as a midfielder, was out of position due to injuries in the Wolfsburg squad.

Bayern controlled the rest of the first half, but Wolfsburg came back when Boey fouled Tiago Tomás right after the break. Boey received a yellow card, and Lovro Majer equalized with a penalty.

Majer then hit the post shortly after, and Patrick Wimmer won the ball from Kim Min-jae, setting up Majer for his second goal and Wolfsburg’s second goal in the 55th minute.
