Bernard Hopkins takes aim at “side show” Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight: “I could watch two turtles race and be more excited”

Boxing luminary Bernard Hopkins has raised doubts about the highly anticipated boxing clash between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson.

The collision between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, slated to unfold later this year, has garnered considerable attention in the boxing world. The showdown is currently earmarked for July 20 at AT&T Stadium, with Netflix securing the rights to stream the event.

Given Tyson’s age and period of inactivity, many voices within the boxing community have voiced skepticism regarding the legitimacy of this bout. It’s no secret that Jake Paul, known for his penchant for unconventional opponents, seems to be adhering to his trend.

In the discerning eyes of Bernard Hopkins, however, this upcoming match-up fails to ignite the excitement he typically associates with boxing.

Hopkins, in expressing his disapproval of the Tyson/Paul bout, remarked to Fight Hub TV and other reporters on Tuesday, “I don’t like it. I don’t like it. I look at Mike, I look at him different in a way of my era, like people looked at Ali. I looked at Ali different, too. Marvin Hagler, ‘Sugar’ Ray Robinson.”

The veteran boxer elaborated on his stance, stating, “I don’t like it. I think it’s becoming more of a side show with some sweat and maybe some blood, if we’re lucky. I won’t watch it. I could watch two turtles race and be more excited.”

Hopkins underscored his disappointment by reflecting on his personal history with Tyson, saying, “It’s because of how I look at Mike Tyson. I’ve shared not only the ring with Mike Tyson a few times, but the era, a little tip of the era. I just think it degrades him. You’re getting 100 million, 200 million. Please, OK.”
