Charlie Blackmon contributed with two hits and two RBIs, while Nolan Jones delivered a two-run triple as the Colorado Rockies secured their first victory of the season with a 9-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night.
After being outscored 23-4 in the first two games, the Rockies aimed to turn things around. Left-handed pitcher Austin Gomber emphasized the importance of winning the game after the disappointing start to the season. The team’s focus was on finding a way to win and regain confidence.
Trailing 3-2 in the fifth inning, the Rockies launched a powerful comeback. The first five batters reached base, leading to a five-run surge. Blackmon drove in two runs with a double, followed by Jones’ triple that brought in two more runs. Ryan McMahon’s sacrifice fly then scored Jones, sealing the fifth run of the inning.
Ezequiel Tovar contributed with a two-run homer in the second inning, while Brenton Doyle added another two-run shot in the eighth.
Gomber pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs, six hits, and three walks. Peter Lambert earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief, and Nick Mears successfully navigated through a tough situation in the seventh inning.
Despite Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s solo home run narrowing the gap to 7-4 in the fifth inning, the Diamondbacks couldn’t sustain their offensive momentum. Eugenio Suárez also hit a solo homer for the Diamondbacks, his first since joining the team in the offseason.
Starting pitcher Tommy Henry struggled, conceding five runs, six hits, and two walks over four innings.
Although the Diamondbacks entered the game with a strong offensive performance in the first two games, they couldn’t replicate their success on Saturday. Despite an early 2-0 lead, they failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities and hit into four double plays, hindering their chances of mounting a comeback.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo acknowledged the team’s struggles to capitalize on key moments in the game, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of baseball.
