Blake Snell, the pitcher for San Francisco, didn’t let any Twins players reach base in the first six innings on Sunday, until Manuel Margot got a hit in the 7th.
Snell, who won the NL Cy Young Award and signed a $62 million contract with the Giants this offseason, was aiming for his first victory in eight starts with his new team.
He struck out a season-high eight batters.
Snell kept the Twins from scoring when he fielded Diego Castilla’s hit in the sixth inning and threw him out at first base. In the next at-bat, Christian Vazquez hit a hard grounder that Giants shortstop Brett Wisely dove to stop and then threw to first base.
Snell was hoping to become the second Giants pitcher ever to pitch a perfect game. Matt Cain achieved this feat against the Houston Astros on June 13, 2012.
There have been 24 perfect games in MLB history. Domingo German of the New York Yankees was the most recent pitcher to accomplish this, retiring all 27 batters he faced against the Oakland Athletics on June 28, 2023.
