During Friday night’s game against the Angels, Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story had to leave the field in the fourth inning after hurting his left shoulder while making a diving catch to stop a hit by Mike Trout.
Story and the Red Sox are uncertain about the extent of his injury until he gets an MRI exam on Saturday. The experienced infielder felt downcast after the 8-6 win, unsure if his shoulder had dislocated from the impact of his fall. “It’s frustrating,” said Story. “There are a lot of emotions. We’re not sure how serious it is yet, but it’s frustrating and quite painful.”
When Trout hit a hard ground ball, Story managed to get his glove on it, but he landed awkwardly on his shoulder, causing him considerable pain. Third baseman Rafael Devers expressed sympathy, and Story remained on the ground for a couple of minutes before being helped to the dugout by the manager and training staff.
Story has faced injury challenges in his first two seasons with Boston after joining from Colorado on a significant contract. He played just 94 games in 2022 due to hand and foot injuries, and only 43 games last season following elbow surgery.
Manager Alex Cora praised Story’s leadership and commitment to the team, acknowledging the difficult situation and hoping for a swift recovery. Pablo Reyes took over at shortstop after Story’s exit, and Cora expressed uncertainty about future arrangements if Story is sidelined.
Despite batting .226 this season, Story has been a key player for the Red Sox, tied for the team lead in RBIs before leaving the game.
“He’s done everything possible to stay on the field,” said Cora. “Hopefully, we can still achieve our goals for the season, but it’s tough to see him go out like that.”
