Brandon Nimmo smashed a three-run homer, sparking a big six-run fifth inning, and the New York Mets came from behind to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-5 on Tuesday night.
The Cardinals not only lost their fourth consecutive game but also suffered a blow when catcher Willson Contreras broke his left forearm in the second inning after being hit by J.D. Martinez’s swing. Contreras, a three-time All-Star, has been batting .280 with six home runs and 12 RBIs.
“I’m in quite a bit of pain, but I’m really disappointed to be missing out,” Contreras said. “I know it’s going to be hard for me not to be out there with the guys, but I’ll do my best to stay engaged, support each other, and cheer for them because that’s the best I can do.”
José Buttó pitched five innings, allowing three runs as the Mets secured their second consecutive win. Although Buttó gave up all three runs in the first inning, he retired nine of the last ten batters he faced. He conceded five hits, struck out three, and walked three.
“It was tough for him, especially with his fastball control, particularly the two-seamer,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. “He struggled to find it. But he kept battling. I think his secondary pitches, like the changeup and breaking ball, helped keep him in the game.”
