Reports indicate that the Milwaukee Brewers are facing a setback as they gear up for the 2024 season, with one of their key players set to miss significant time.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, closer Devin Williams has encountered a major obstacle with two stress fractures in his back. This unfortunate injury is expected to keep him out of action for approximately three months, with the team aiming for a midseason return following a rigorous rehabilitation plan.
Williams sought advice from a back specialist, who confirmed the diagnosis of two stress fractures and provided an optimistic outlook for a full recovery. The prescribed regimen includes six weeks of rest followed by an additional six weeks of focused rehabilitation.
The timing couldn’t be worse for the Brewers, who were already facing uncertainties heading into the new season.
The departure of Manager Craig Counsell to the Chicago Cubs and the trade of former National League Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes to the Baltimore Orioles had left some gaps in the team’s roster. Williams, a dependable presence in the bullpen, would have been relied upon to navigate through this transitional period.
Having spent his entire career with the Brewers, Williams has consistently delivered stellar performances. His accolades include winning the 2020 National League Rookie of the Year and earning consecutive All-Star selections in 2022 and 2023.
Last season, he showcased his prowess with a remarkable 1.53 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and 87 strikeouts over 58.2 innings, following an equally impressive 1.93 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and 96 strikeouts in 2022.
With Williams sidelined, Milwaukee will turn to alternative options such as Trevor Megill, Joel Payamps, and Abner Uribe to fill the void at the backend of games. However, replacing the leadership and reliability of their star closer will undoubtedly pose a challenge for the Brewers as they strive to stay competitive.
The Brewers are set to kick off their regular season on March 28 against the New York Mets, facing the daunting task of navigating through the early stages of the campaign without their bullpen linchpin, Devin Williams.
