Brian Daboll is in a tough spot as the head coach of the New York Giants, and the team can’t handle many more setbacks.
This became clear on Sunday when star running back Saquon Barkley returned to MetLife Stadium for the first time since being drafted second overall in 2018, and the Philadelphia Eagles dominated with a 28-3 win.
The Giants’ record dropped to 2-5, matching the same record they had at this time last season. Many fans in New York had been looking forward to this game since the NFL schedule came out.
The Giants hoped Barkley’s return would not be memorable, but it turned out to be just that. He rushed for 176 yards, marking his second-best rushing game, scored a touchdown, and energized the Eagles with runs of 55, 41, and 38 yards.
With the season still young, questions arise about Daboll’s future. Despite leading the Giants to a surprising playoff appearance in his first year in 2022, the team finished 6-11 last season and now has an 8-16 record in their last 24 games. They have yet to win at home this season, scoring only one touchdown and a total of 31 points.
Daboll had his usual meeting with co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch the day after the game, but he didn’t share the details of their conversation.
“Obviously, the results aren’t what we want them to be,” Daboll said. “But we’re working hard to fix the things we need to fix to get different results.”
