Brice Turang’s eighth-inning grounder drove in the game’s lone run, spoiling a strong start by Chicago’s Jameson Taillon as the Milwaukee Brewers edged past the Cubs 1-0 on Tuesday night.
Trevor Megill secured his 20th save by closing out the ninth inning, while Elvis Peguero (6-3), the second of four Milwaukee relievers, earned the win.
Taillon pitched 7 1/3 innings for Chicago, allowing two singles before Julian Merryweather, recently back from the injured list, gave up Turang’s decisive grounder that scored Jake Bauers.
“Our pitchers were shutting them down,” Turang said. “I was just happy to get a run in.”
In the eighth, the Cubs loaded the bases against Jared Koenig but failed to score after left-hander induced a flyout from pinch-hitter David Bote.
Colin Rea started for the Brewers, pitching five innings and allowing four hits and two walks while striking out eight. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second inning by inducing a groundout to end the threat.
Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy praised the team’s composure: “It’s a good win. We kept our poise.”
Taillon, aiming for his fourth consecutive win, gave up four hits and three walks while striking out three.
“The results were pretty good,” Taillon said. “Honestly, I didn’t feel my best, but that’s been a common theme this year. Just find a way to get it done and find a way to get creative with the pitch mix and get contact on my terms and my pitches in my good areas.”
Nico Hoerner contributed two hits for the Cubs.
