Sean Payton, head coach of the Denver Broncos, is notably impressed with rookie quarterback Bo Nix. During a recent appearance on SportsCenter, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Nix has exceeded expectations since being selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Nix’s performance has sparked a significant quarterback competition within the team, with the potential to secure the starting role for Week 1.
Nix is set to compete with veteran Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson, who was traded from the New York Jets to Denver in the offseason. Stidham, who has been with the Broncos since 2023, is the most experienced of the trio, while Wilson, the No. 2 pick in the 2021 Draft, is hoping to revitalize his career with the Broncos.
Interestingly, Nix previously took over Stidham’s position as Auburn’s quarterback, adding a layer of intrigue to their current competition.
Despite not yet being named the starter, Nix is seen as the future of the Broncos’ quarterback position. Selected with the 12th overall pick, Nix was the sixth quarterback chosen in the draft. At 24 years old, he is poised to leverage his impressive collegiate career into a successful professional career, with the Broncos having high hopes for him.
In college, Nix amassed 15,351 yards and 113 touchdowns over five seasons, culminating in a standout final year at Oregon. His last season saw him throw for 4,508 yards, 45 touchdowns, and only three interceptions, leading the Ducks to a 12-2 record in 2023. His collegiate success has positioned him as a promising candidate for the NFL.
Since Peyton Manning’s departure after leading the Broncos to Super Bowl 50 in 2015, the team has struggled to find stability at the quarterback position. Bo Nix’s role will be pivotal in addressing this issue and could significantly improve the team’s performance in the future.
