The Cleveland Browns are poised to welcome back seasoned quarterback Joe Flacco, as reported by Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. However, the team is also setting its sights on another quarterback to potentially serve as Deshaun Watson’s backup.
Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reveals that the Browns are eyeing Jameis Winston for the role of backup quarterback.
Winston has spent the past four seasons with the New Orleans Saints, seeing action in seven games in 2023 while backing up Derek Carr. During his limited playing time, he threw for 264 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Cabot stated on Saturday that Flacco is highly likely to return to the Browns, with both sides showing interest in a reunion. Despite being named NFL Comeback Player of the Year, Flacco aimed for a shot at a starting position, which the quarterback market didn’t offer him.
Flacco notably guided the Browns to victory in four of their last five games, achieving over 300 passing yards in four consecutive outings. He completed 60.3% of his passes for 1,616 yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions while filling in for the injured Watson, who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery.
Speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio recently, the 39-year-old expressed Cleveland as his top choice “all things equal,” given the absence of a starting job opportunity elsewhere.
With Watson expected to return to full fitness next season, the Browns aspire to emerge as leading contenders in the AFC. Yet, considering Watson’s injury history, it’s prudent for Cleveland to have backup plans in place, making the addition of Flacco or Winston a wise move.
