Growing up in Alabama, Jameis Winston always understood the rivalry between the Steelers and Browns, which was known for its intense and gritty nature.

For Winston, it was enough to hear NFL Films narrator John Facenda, also called “the voice of God,” to realize that a game between Pittsburgh and Cleveland was more than just a regular football match.

“It’s the blood, sweat, and tears that happen. These games are hard-nosed, hard-fought,” Winston said, clenching his fist and punching his other hand to make his point. “A true cold-weather football game. This is premier.”

On Thursday night, Winston, who threw for 395 yards last week, will be part of one of the NFL’s most intense rivalries as the Steelers (8-2) take on the Browns (2-8). This game seemed more exciting when the schedule was first released in September, but now it’s not quite as enticing.

While Pittsburgh has dealt with some quarterback issues, they’re back at the top of the tough AFC North. On the other hand, Cleveland’s season has fallen apart, and it might require another major rebuild for a franchise that believed its struggles were behind it.

The Steelers are on a roll, having won five straight games. They just defeated the Baltimore Ravens 18-16 at home. Although the game wasn’t pretty, it showed the Steelers’ typical style—strong defense and solid special teams.

Chris Boswell’s six field goals were enough for the win, and the defense played well enough to keep Lamar Jackson in check. This was the second time this season that Boswell had scored all of Pittsburgh’s points, which shows coach Mike Tomlin’s trust in his kicker and team.

“It’s whatever’s required to win,” Winston said, ahead of his first game against the Steelers. “Is it six field goals? Is it two blocked punts? Is it five touchdowns? Whatever’s required.”

The Browns do have one thing working in their favor: Thursday games have been good for them. Cleveland has won eight straight home games on Thursdays, including two victories over the Steelers in the past five years.

However, the Steelers’ loyal fans, known for waving Terrible Towels, will surely show up to support their team, making it feel like a home game for Pittsburgh. The Steelers expect a tough challenge from the Browns in prime time.

“We’re going into a hostile environment,” said defensive tackle Cam Heyward. “We respect the background. We understand what those fans and their team are capable of. It’s like those big rivalries in college football. It doesn’t matter what the record is. You’re going to get their best shot.”

“We have to respect that, and we’re looking forward to going up there,” he added.
