The Chicago Bears announced eight captains for the 2024 season, including rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. This marks a significant moment as Williams, the No. 1 draft pick, becomes the first rookie captain since Matt Eberflus became head coach in 2022 and possibly the only first-year player in franchise history to be named a season-long captain since the team began the tradition in 2007.
The captains were chosen through a player-voting process, reflecting the respect Williams has already earned among his teammates.
Wide receiver DJ Moore highlighted Williams’ work ethic and the respect he garnered from teammates, particularly in overcoming challenges during practices. Williams’ leadership qualities have been a central topic of discussion throughout the offseason, especially after he replaced former quarterback Justin Fields, who was traded to Pittsburgh. Williams’ ability to quickly win over the locker room since joining the team in May has impressed both teammates and management.
General Manager Ryan Poles praised Williams’ natural leadership, noting that it is genuine and not forced. Poles emphasized that Williams’ authentic approach, combined with his performance on the field and strong social skills, has allowed him to naturally emerge as a leader within the team. This combination of authenticity and ability has helped Williams quickly gain the trust and respect of his peers, leading to his selection as a captain.
In addition to Williams, the Bears named seven other captains, including the oldest player on the roster, 40-year-old tight end Marcedes Lewis. Other captains include wide receiver DJ Moore, tight end Cole Kmet, linebackers T.J. Edwards and Tremaine Edmunds, cornerback Jaylon Johnson, and safety Kevin Byard III. Coach Eberflus expressed confidence in this larger group of captains, noting that the team has developed a strong leadership core over the past three years.
Eberflus also mentioned that the decision to appoint Williams as a captain was based on high rankings from both the offensive and defensive teams during the voting process. He acknowledged that while other players also received strong support, Williams stood out as a leader across the entire team. This appointment of a rookie captain underlines the faith the team has in Williams’ leadership abilities as they move into the 2024 season.
