Cam Newton, the former Carolina Panthers quarterback, recently discussed his views on the best dual-threat quarterback in NFL history, asserting that the title belongs to Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens.
Newton expressed his admiration for Jackson’s unique style, contrasting it with his own, highlighting Jackson’s unmatched speed and electrifying playmaking ability. He acknowledged that while he played with power, Jackson and other quarterbacks like Michael Vick possess a speed that sets them apart in the dual-threat category.
Jackson, who earned his second All-Pro selection, showcased his versatility with 3,678 passing yards and 821 rushing yards along with 24 passing touchdowns and 5 rushing touchdowns in the previous season.
Newton has consistently praised Jackson’s skills, dating back to Jackson’s college career at Louisville and continuing through his NFL tenure. Newton expressed excitement when Jackson was drafted in the first round by the Ravens, noting his exceptional talent and expressing a desire to learn from his playing style.
In addition to Jackson and himself, Newton also includes Michael Vick among his top three dual-threat quarterbacks of all time. Vick holds the record for most career rushing yards by an NFL quarterback with 6,109 yards, closely followed by Newton with 5,628 yards.
Jackson has rapidly ascended the rushing yards leaderboard, currently sitting fourth all-time with 5,258 yards, showing potential to surpass Vick’s record in the near future.
Newton remains confident in his own legacy, particularly in terms of rushing touchdowns, where he holds the NFL record with 75 touchdowns.
He noted that Jackson would need to score 46 more touchdowns to challenge this record, indicating his respect for Jackson’s abilities while also acknowledging his own accomplishments in the league.
Newton’s recognition of Jackson as the premier dual-threat quarterback reflects both his admiration for Jackson’s skills and his humility in assessing his own place in NFL history.
