Third-ranked Carlos Alcaraz has pulled out of the Italian Open due to a right forearm injury. This comes after he had to withdraw from tournaments in Monte Carlo and Barcelona because of the same injury. Just two days ago, he lost in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open to Andrey Rublev.

“After playing in Madrid, I felt some pain and discomfort in my arm. Tests revealed a muscle edema in my pronator teres, related to my recent injury,” Alcaraz shared on social media. “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to compete in Rome. I need to rest and recover fully.”

During the Madrid Open, Alcaraz wore a compression sleeve on his right forearm. He will turn 21 on Sunday. The Italian Open begins next week.

Alcaraz, the reigning Wimbledon and 2022 U.S. Open champion, is aiming to return for the French Open starting May 26. Last year, he reached the semifinals at Roland Garros, where he lost to Novak Djokovic.

Meanwhile, second-ranked Jannik Sinner and fourth-ranked Daniil Medvedev are also dealing with injuries. Sinner withdrew from the Madrid Open due to a hip injury, while Medvedev retired from his quarterfinal match in Madrid due to a leg issue.

Djokovic, the top-ranked player, is expected to return for the Rome tournament. Alcaraz’s only appearance in Rome last year ended with a loss to qualifier Fabian Marozsan.
