Carson Kelly smashed a three-run home run in the 10th inning, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 5-0 win against the New York Mets on Monday night. This victory marks the Tigers’ best start in almost ten years. The Mets, on the other hand, fell to 0-4 for the first time since 2005.
Throughout the first nine innings, both teams struggled to get runners into scoring position, but the Tigers broke the tie in the 10th. Spencer Torkelson and Parker Meadows scored on a grounder by Colt Keith and a sacrifice fly by Javier Báez before Kelly’s homer against Michael Tonkin.
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch praised the team’s performance in the 10th inning, highlighting their resilience and strong at-bats.
Jason Foley and Shelby Miller held the Mets scoreless in the ninth and 10th innings, securing the Tigers’ 4-0 start, their best since 2015.
Despite a promising start from Mets pitcher Sean Manaea, who held a no-hit bid for 5 2/3 innings, the team struggled to capitalize on offensive opportunities. Edwin Díaz, making his second appearance after recovering from a knee injury, struck out two in the ninth inning.
Tigers starter Reese Olson also delivered an impressive performance, allowing no runs and only three hits while striking out three in 5 2/3 innings.
